About Pocomoke River State Park - Blue Heron Loop

Campground in Maryland.

Nestled along the scenic Pocomoke River in Maryland's Eastern Shore, Pocomoke River State Park offers a serene escape into one of the region's most picturesque natural settings. The Blue Heron Loop provides an ideal base for RV camping, allowing you to experience the authentic beauty of this coastal Maryland landscape while enjoying the comfort of your mobile home.

The Pocomoke River itself is the centerpiece of this remarkable destination. Known as one of the most pristine river systems on the East Coast, the river winds through dense forests and wetlands, creating an almost mystical atmosphere that feels worlds away from urban life. The name itself comes from the Pocomoke Indians, and the area maintains a deep connection to its natural and cultural heritage. Whether you're an early riser or a night owl, you'll find the river offers different moods throughout the day, from misty mornings that seem pulled from a storybook to golden sunsets that paint the water in warm hues.

For outdoor enthusiasts, the park is a paradise. Fishing is exceptional here, with anglers regularly catching largemouth bass, catfish, and other freshwater species. The river is also perfect for kayaking and canoeing, allowing you to paddle through peaceful waterways and spot the abundant wildlife, from great blue herons to bald eagles, that give the loop its evocative name. Hiking trails weave through the park's forested areas, offering opportunities to stretch your legs and explore the unique ecosystem of Maryland's Eastern Shore.

The broader region surrounding the park adds even more appeal to your stay. You're positioned to explore charming small towns, local seafood restaurants famous for their crab houses, and historic sites that tell the story of colonial America. The quieter pace of Eastern Shore living contrasts beautifully with the natural adventure available right at your campsite.

This destination appeals particularly to nature lovers, fishing enthusiasts, paddlers, and anyone seeking a peaceful retreat where the demands of daily life fade away. Families enjoy the educational aspects of the park's natural setting, while couples find the romantic atmosphere perfect for reconnecting. Retirees and digital nomads appreciate the tranquil environment and slower pace. With its highly-rated facilities and the natural wonders that surround it, Pocomoke River State Park represents the best of Maryland's outdoor heritage.

We rented a cabin for a two-day stay. The natural environment is superb, and the bathhouses are exceptionally clean—truly at hotel-level quality. In our experience, this is the number one campground in the USA! Thank you!

Great park with nice hikes. Only electric hook ups at Acorn Loop. The water spigots dotted around the loop were not working. Had to get water at the dish wash area next to the bathrooms.

Love it here. Been visiting since 2021. Visited 3 times. Park is clean and well maintained. Clean bathrooms with hot water. They spray for bugs so biting bugs especially aren’t bad at all. Nice maintained hiking trails. Beautiful spacious campsites. Friendly accommodating staff who are always professional. Acorn trail is my favorite camping loop. This year we visited the nature center. Beautiful campground with tall trees and wooded sites. Some loops have electric but not water. Plenty of trails to hike and park roads to bicycle. There is a pool, a camp store, and the river to kayak on. The bathrooms are fine. One problem is the horseflies so bring bug spray! The park is pet friendly.

Great little park close to home. Not too crowded, still a pretty quiet place to go disconnect and explore. I've done some fantastic fishing out here in the past too.
