About Monomoy Wilderness

The Monomoy Wilderness now contains a total of 3,244 acres and is managed by the Fish & Wildlife Service. All of the Wilderness is in the state of Massachusetts. In 1970 the Monomoy Wilderness became part of the now over 110 million acre National Wilderness Preservation System. As recently as 1958, this area was an extension of the mainland, the eroding shoreline at the elbow of Cape Cod. Severe winter storms isolated Monomoy Point from the mainland and, 20 years later, separated North Monomoy

Monomoy Wilderness offers a truly special camping experience on Cape Cod, where pristine natural beauty and outdoor adventure await at every turn. Located in one of Massachusetts' most scenic coastal regions, this public campground serves as the perfect basecamp for exploring the unique ecosystems and charming character of the Lower Cape.

The campground itself provides a peaceful retreat surrounded by the distinctive landscape of Cape Cod, where pitch pine forests give way to sandy trails and coastal marshlands. The area is known for its relatively unspoiled natural environment compared to more developed sections of the Cape, making it ideal for travelers seeking a more authentic outdoor experience. Whether you're an early riser hoping to catch the sunrise or someone who simply wants to breathe in the fresh salt air, the setting here captures what many people love most about New England coastal camping.

What truly sets this area apart is proximity to Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge, one of the region's most important natural areas. The refuge encompasses barrier islands and provides critical habitat for numerous bird species, making it a paradise for birders and wildlife enthusiasts. Visitors can explore the refuge through various trails and water access points, with opportunities to spot everything from shorebirds to migratory waterfowl depending on the season. Photography enthusiasts will find endless subjects in the natural landscape and wildlife.

The Lower Cape location puts you within reach of charming villages, local restaurants, and authentic Cape Cod attractions that don't rely heavily on theme parks or commercial development. The community here maintains much of its traditional character, with working waterfronts, historic sites, and a strong maritime heritage. Day trips to nearby towns offer excellent seafood dining, antique shops, galleries, and opportunities to learn about Cape Cod's rich history.

For nature lovers and those seeking peace and quiet, Monomoy Wilderness provides an excellent base for kayaking, hiking, fishing, and simply enjoying the remarkable natural world that makes Cape Cod special. The campground appeals to families, retirees, birders, photographers, and anyone looking to escape crowds while still having convenient access to all Cape Cod has to offer.

Park here and then walk through a private road and down to the beach. Wonderful place off from the beaten path. Beautiful house, boats, ocean view, and plenty of bird. Sandals recommended for the beach!

No tickets needed. We are met by two incredibly friendly volunteers who gave our kids free color books, apparently a Saturday special. After a 10-minute walk through a gated neighborhood, we found the trail to the park. After a brief Sandy walk, an amazing Vista opened up. Tidal pools, egrets, shells look, shallow water for wading. Perfect for a family with small children. The kids could just run... No tickets needed. Coming with good old memories of hiking on the seaside trail at low tide and seeing the trail disappearing behind us being submerged in water and then we had to take the trail through marshland back…, it’s really in memories now! Haven’t been here for almost five years and when arrived we were puzzled “ where is the small museum?!”, we saw a shed with tables for information display instead, later... Haven’t been here for almost five years and when arrived we were puzzled “ where is the small museum?!”, we saw a shed with tables for information display instead, later we were told that the museum has been demolished two years ago, even worst news was that the 3 mile seaside hiking trail that we were coming back for was no longer accessible due to the erosion and loss of one session of beach! Anyway we decided to renew ( not refreshable now!) the hiking experience at the time of lowest tide, great vistas of sand bars appeared once we reach to the waterfront, still that blue sapphire like water surrounding a peaceful sanctuary! We especially walked to those eroded coastal line section, trying to find back those old memories not taking away by the Mother Nature! A good place for family with kids or for a quiet moment of your own mindfulness and peace. We encountered a group for bird watching, and spotted a yellow leg sandpiper and a wounded bird ( reported to the staff at the shed), lots of baby crabs and horseshoe crabs. No ticket needed now to access the hiking trail, the trail head located in an upscale neighborhood. Parking space was full by the time we left at 11:00 am.

Wow! What an amazing place! You can already tell it was going to be a unique experience just driving here. The scenery was breathtaking and the place feels like "members only." The trail was nice and loops to the beach. I read there were mnaybseal sightings in the area but I didn't see any during my hike. Maybe next time. What can be more relaxing than hiking on a beach on a crisp autumn day with no one else in sight except the sounds of the ocean.

Beautiful area! Kind local told us you can park at the spot Google took you to. Then walk back down the road, take a left into the neighborhood and walk down and you’ll see the trail. Nice walk! Lots of wildlife. Walked along the inland and saw hundreds of horseshoe crabs. Very lovely area.
