About Bear Lake Campground (Chequamegon-Nicolet NF, WI)

Federal campground in Michigan.

Bear Lake Campground sits nestled within the expansive Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, offering RV travelers an authentic northern Wisconsin wilderness experience that feels worlds away from the everyday hustle. This public campground provides a genuine escape into nature, where towering pines frame sparkling waters and the air fills with the sounds of loons calling across pristine lakes. The campground's location in one of the largest national forests east of the Mississippi River means you're surrounded by thousands of acres of protected natural beauty, pristine waterways, and abundant wildlife viewing opportunities.

The Bear Lake area is particularly special for water enthusiasts and nature lovers. The clear waters of Bear Lake itself invite fishing, paddling, and peaceful days spent by the shoreline. Whether you're an experienced angler looking to catch walleye, northern pike, or panfish, or simply someone who wants to launch a canoe for a quiet morning paddle, the lake provides endless recreation. The surrounding forest trails offer excellent opportunities for hiking and wildlife observation, with visitors frequently spotting deer, eagles, and other forest inhabitants.

This region of northern Wisconsin is known for its unspoiled landscape and strong outdoor recreation culture. The national forest setting means minimal commercial development and maximum natural scenery. Summer months bring comfortable temperatures ideal for camping, while the area's fall colors rival any destination in the upper Midwest. Spring and early summer bring exceptional wildflower displays and active wildlife as nature awakens.

Beyond the immediate campground, the broader area offers charming small towns within reasonable driving distance, where you'll find local restaurants, supply shops, and authentic Wisconsin character. The region is also well-positioned for exploring other national forest attractions, scenic byways, and outdoor recreation areas. Bear Lake Campground appeals to RV travelers seeking genuine wilderness camping, families wanting to introduce children to forest living, retirees looking for peaceful retreats, and outdoor enthusiasts who prioritize natural beauty and tranquility over resort-style amenities.

We were in site 17 on the lake and it was beautiful. My kids enjoyed fishing from the shore. Caught six big rock bass. We had the whole area to ourselves, no other campers were around us. It was so peaceful and just what we needed. We took the path to Little cub Lake and only caught a little perch. But the mosquitos were horrible there. My husband also took some kids on the Rat River Trail on their bikes. Our trip was May 29-June 1st.

Beautiful campground and lake. The host was so kind and helpful. The pit toilets were the cleanest I've EVER seen anywhere. Nearby was a trail to the Rat River that I highly recommend. It was so beautiful. We will be visiting here again and again. The only downside is that there are no showers here, so plan accordingly.

Loved it so much even on a chilly night. Our site was right on the water with steps to get down to the shore. Very quiet an peaceful in the woods. Heard and saw some loons! Clean bathrooms. We will definitely be back. Great place to reconnect with nature.

Definately a hidden gem in Northern Wisconsin. Perfect place to camp. Small campground, no motor lake, small campsites so no monstrous campers can fit. Toilets and campsites are super clean. Views are great, it is mostly quiet, and peaceful. Next to boondocking in the wild this place is the place to be. I will be back again.

Great campground for a relaxing weekend! Stayed over the 4th and didn't feel crowded or busy like a state park. Pumps for water worked well - some of the best drinking water we've had at a camp ground! Lots of bugs to contend with - biting flies worse than mosquitoes. Stayed over the 4th and didn't feel crowded or busy like a state park. Pumps for water worked well - some of the best drinking water we've had at a camp ground! Lots of bugs to contend with - biting flies worse than mosquitoes. We had plenty of room at our site for a tent, screen tent and 2 hammocks (although the trees for hammocks were hard to come by at site #14). Walk in site #15 had it's own steps to the lake and we were able to launch our kayak there rather than drive to the boat launch. Lake is only 60 acres, so a paddle around the lake didn't take long. We caught a few small northern and a few bass. The swim beach has a lot of sand and good shade, too! We brought floaties and spent most afternoons just relaxing in the water. I booked online in advance. The sites are marked with red tags if reserved, green if open or just the site number if walk in site. Quiet hours do run from 10 pm - 6 am, so please if you have an RV, do not run your generator all night (like our site neighbors did). Seriously, if you need AC that bad, maybe camping isn't for you.
