About Rifle River-Group Use Campground

Campground in Michigan.

Rifle River-Group Use Campground offers a peaceful retreat in the heart of Michigan's natural landscape, making it an ideal destination for families, groups, and anyone seeking a genuine camping experience. Located in the Huron National Forest, this public campground provides an authentic connection to the outdoors that keeps visitors returning year after year.

The campground sits along the scenic Rifle River, which becomes the focal point of many guests' stays. The river setting creates a serene atmosphere perfect for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life. The surrounding forest landscape offers natural beauty throughout the seasons, with tall pines and hardwoods creating a shaded, comfortable camping environment. Morning mist rising from the river and evening wildlife sounds provide that immersive nature experience that RV enthusiasts crave.

What makes this location particularly appealing is its accessibility to the broader Huron National Forest ecosystem. The area is known for outdoor recreation opportunities that extend well beyond the campground itself. Hiking trails weave through the surrounding forest, offering varying difficulty levels for different skill levels. The Rifle River itself attracts visitors interested in paddling and water activities, with canoe and kayak opportunities available for those wanting to explore from the water.

I been going here for over 30 years. Lots of trails. Lots of wild life. Nice view of the stars. You'll hear faint drums in the distance. You'll hear it better near Ambrose campground. I still have no idea where they're coming from lol. But it's an amazing time.

The Good: Camped at one of the Grousehaven sites for 2 nights. One of the littles got pulled over by the patrolling DNR for riding their bike and wearing their helmet and was given a ticket of safety for a free ice cream at McDonalds. The road through the park is paved with some tight spots depending on how people park. The site was nice with a big firepit and handicapped picnic table and what looked like a new power post at the site I was at. The park was very packed when we were there and it was still enjoyable. I went with family and they had their own camper on the site next to me and the park let me turn my small popup around so our doors faced each other kind of making it a group site (It does not seem they care how you park your rig but I called and asked first). There was a couple communal water spigots around the park that seemed to be kept clean. The beach is average size with a handicapped plastic mat that goes from the grass all the way into the water for wheelchairs and anything else with wheels. The swimming area does not go out too far since there is a drop-off that is marked with buoys. The water was clean with no trash in the water and on the beach. There is a huge area to run around and chill with a swing set play area. There was a mystery PVC pipe with what I hope is clean water draining out right onto the beach area. The trash area was big with 3 big dumpsters and lots of parking with a trailhead near by. There is signing in the park to direct you to where you need to go to find your site. There were trails all over the place but I did not go in them.

Well we have camped here every year for the last 12 years. It is one of our most favorite campgrounds. Very clean, the rangers took care of our needs when asked. We stayed in the Devoe campground and the lake is marvelous as always.

DeVoe Lake is one of my favorite spots in Michigan. Love that DeVoe Lake has no motorized boats. Great place to kayak, swim and just be with nature.

Only camped here once near the river. Lots are good size except hill is crazy sloped And almost impossible to level a trailer. There's a reason why the camp site was long. The spots we had were hard, and were not noted in booking the spots. Otherwise the place was quiet, nice to walk around. I'm going to tey again, in different spots this time. However, the road to get to this place sucks - gravel and dust everywhere. Need to clean your trailer and vehicle after driving down the road.

Upon check-in, another male adult, let me know that he wasn’t able to make it due to a funeral which I told the younger lady and she said that we would be able to refund and figure it all out at checkout. To say the least they refunded the couple but refused to refund the third adult that wasn’t able to join us. She even lied to me saying that that was a refund for three adults and when I questioned her, she said that’s what we agreed on ($112). (she’s talking about the couple that called to Refund talked to them about refund price). I didn’t know that you could agree or negotiate refunds what a joke. This is completely illegal and it was a shame because our entire group really enjoyed camping here for the past 4 years. I was even looking at how bad the reviews were thinking there’s no way this place has been great to us, but I can 100% understand now. I think it’s Time for them to find better staffing of ladies who can actually handle the pressure of organizing campers on a weekend.

I tried to leave a review earlier. In case it didnt make it I wanted to leave another. I have always had a good experience here. Yes it may be difficult to call sometimes as they get busy with all the people. But this is a smaller owned campground with a very rustic feel. The tubing and pricing it great. I never have issues and they are very dog friendly.(Lily's first tube tripped documented below... I tried to leave a review earlier. In case it didnt make it I wanted to leave another.
