About Sleeping Bear National Lake Shore - Weather Station Campground

Campground in Michigan.

Nestled along the stunning shores of Lake Michigan, the Weather Station Campground at Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore offers one of Michigan's most memorable RV camping experiences. This public campground sits within one of the nation's most remarkable natural preserves, where towering sand dunes meet crystalline waters and pristine beaches stretch for miles. The location puts you in the heart of the Sleeping Bear region, named after a Native American legend, where dramatic bluffs rise 450 feet above the shoreline and create some of the most breathtaking vistas you'll encounter anywhere.

The campground itself provides easy access to everything that makes Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore so special. You're positioned perfectly to explore the famous Dunes Climb, a steep sandy trail that rewards hikers with panoramic views of the lake and surrounding landscape. The scenic Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive winds through the park, offering numerous pullouts and shorter walks that showcase the dunes' geological beauty without requiring extensive hiking. For beach lovers, the location provides convenient access to some of Michigan's best sandy shores, where swimming, beachcombing, and sunset watching are quintessential summer activities.

The area surrounding the campground appeals to a wide variety of travelers. Nature enthusiasts come to experience the unique ecosystem where rare plant species thrive in the sandy soil. Hikers appreciate the numerous trails ranging from easy strolls to challenging treks through dune country. Photographers find endless inspiration in the dramatic landscapes, especially during golden hour when light bathes the dunes in warm tones. Families enjoy the accessible beaches and the educational opportunities the national lakeshore provides through its visitor center and interpretive programs.

Weather Station Campground serves as an ideal base for exploring the broader region. The nearby communities of Empire and Glen Arbor offer local restaurants, shops, and services. The region is known for its cool lake breezes even during warm summers, making it comfortable for camping when other Michigan destinations might feel stifling. Fall transforms the area into a spectacular display of color as the surrounding forests shift through their seasonal palette. Winter visitors appreciate the quieter season when the park takes on a contemplative beauty and the dramatic light creates stunning photographic opportunities.

This place is amazing! Possibly the cleanest part of lake Michigan! Water quality is good for swimming and water activities. In my opinion, not as good as Lake Huron or Lake Superior but still pretty good. The surroundings are very picturesque. It is super nice to walk by the different beaches and explore waterscapes. It is an amazing place to visit. It was definitely better than expected.

We like the beach area of Glen Haven for a walk along the beach which is very beautiful.

The government shutdown made getting a passport stamp impossible as the Visitor Center was closed; that was disappointing yet far too often par for the course for our federal government. However, the National Lakeshore itself was/is SPECTACULAR! The entrance to the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive was not staffed and when I tried to pay online, there was not enough cellular signal to reach the website on which to pay. I then realized many cars are going through anyway so I did, too. VERY glad I did. It was a beautiful sunny day, the drive is one-lane, one-way, and twists and turns amongst the dappled lighting of the sun through the forest canopy. THEN, the forest will open up to various turnouts and parking areas for many scenic lookouts and trailheads. There are many large plaques throughout to educate all on the history and science of the land and the peoples who have inhabited it. Definitely check out every lookout. They are breathtakingly wonderful and a great reminder of powers greater than us.

Pay close attention to trail markings and step foot imprints and make sure you bring plenty of fluids. We ended up mistakenly going off trail (limited markings) and got lost for about 10 minutes and went back to the shoreline again to find paths of footprints. We also didn't bring enough water, which compounded the urgency of getting back on the return path.
