About Rock Harbor Campground

Federal campground in Michigan.

Rock Harbor Campground offers a remarkable gateway to Isle Royale National Park, one of America's most pristine and remote island destinations. Located in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, this campground serves as the primary access point for visitors seeking to explore this wilderness treasure surrounded by the waters of Lake Superior.

The campground itself provides a rustic yet comfortable base for your island adventure. As a national park facility, it maintains the natural character of the area while offering essential services for campers. The location puts you in the heart of outdoor exploration, with the entire island ecosystem at your doorstep once you arrive via the Rock Harbor ferry or seaplane service. The air is crisp and clean, carrying the distinctive scent of Superior's waters and the surrounding boreal forest.

Isle Royale is renowned for its exceptional hiking trails that wind through old-growth forests, past pristine inland lakes, and along dramatic shorelines. The island's rich mining history adds another dimension to your visit, with historic sites and artifacts scattered throughout the landscape. Fishing enthusiasts find excellent opportunities for lake trout, whitefish, and other species in both inland lakes and Superior's waters. Wildlife watching is exceptional, with possibilities to see moose, wolves, and numerous bird species in their natural habitat.

The area appeals strongly to those seeking genuine solitude and connection with nature. Backpackers, day hikers, photographers, and naturalists find unlimited inspiration here. The lack of roads and vehicles means the island maintains its undisturbed character, creating an authentic wilderness experience increasingly rare in America. Weather on Lake Superior demands respect and preparation, but visitors who come properly equipped find themselves rewarded with unforgettable experiences.

The nearby town of Houghton provides supplies and services before heading to the island. This is destination camping for those willing to make the journey to truly remote places where the wilderness experience remains primary and modern distractions fade away.

You get your permit on the ferry in a plastic pouch. You attach this to the first available shelter you get in the campground. There are some tent spaces but under a shelter always better and with wire netting you have more security from Moose 🫎 Drop toilets, and flush toilets in shower block with coin operated laundry room

Great staff at this location. Love The NPS. End of the season so the store was out of quite a lot of stuff, but still have the necessities. This is the starting point of a lot of good hikes. The fairy outfit is very good, whoever because of covid they had no food or drinks on the 3-hour ride to Rock harbor.

One of the more crowded campgrounds (probably the most crowded campground), but still infinitely better than most campgrounds inland. Lots of tent sites and shelters. We were able to snag a shelter here and it felt very private and very pleasant. The day hikes out of this campground are superlative. The views are amazing. Plus, this campground has the added bonus of a camp store (cold drinks!), two restaurants, and showers ($6 for 5 minutes, but worth it). Moose frequent the area--lots of sightings. It takes effort to get to Isle Royale, so you will find the company you keep in this campground to be top notch. Great people who are generally respectful neighbors.

Shelters were full upon our arrival but there were plenty of good tent sites available here. Outhouses were in good condition and having the options to grab a shower, shop, and eat at a restaurant a short walk away was lovely.

with a number of people rotating through the port, shelters are taken immediately. plan to walk to the farthest tent sites, which are arguably better because they are quiet and more private.
