About Shoepac Lake State Forest Campground

Campground in Michigan.

Shoepac Lake State Forest Campground offers RV travelers a peaceful retreat into Michigan's natural landscape, providing an authentic camping experience that balances accessibility with wilderness charm. Located within Michigan's state forest system, this campground serves as an excellent base for exploring the region's outdoor attractions and natural beauty.

The surrounding area is characterized by Michigan's classic forest environment, with dense woodlands and pristine water features that define the Upper Peninsula and northern Michigan experience. The lake itself becomes the focal point of the camping experience, offering visitors opportunities to enjoy water-based recreation and quiet moments by the shore. The serene setting attracts campers seeking respite from busy highways and urban environments, making it ideal for families, retired RVers, and anyone looking to disconnect and reconnect with nature.

For outdoor enthusiasts, the area provides excellent opportunities for fishing, hiking, and exploring Michigan's diverse ecosystem. The state forest designation means the surrounding lands are managed for conservation and recreation, ensuring that the natural character of the region remains protected. Travelers will appreciate the quiet atmosphere that comes with being nestled in a forest setting, where the sounds of nature replace highway noise and the pace of life naturally slows down.

The location serves as a wonderful jumping-off point for exploring broader northern Michigan. Depending on the specific location within the state forest, visitors may find themselves well-positioned to explore charming small towns, visit other state parks, or venture into some of Michigan's most scenic regions. The campground appeals to RV travelers who value simplicity and natural surroundings over extensive resort-style amenities, and those who want to experience Michigan's forests and lakes in a more intimate way.

Been camping, hiking, fishing at shoepac and the surrounding tomahawk Lake & Flooding since 1986. It’s always been special place to my family and friends, a wonderful place for well trained dogs. Fishing is good for lower mi, I’ve landed some pretty decent sized pike, bass and even a couple trout, they used to stock the trout, but the fishermen in the area weren’t happy about that because it changed the fishing rules for the lake so they transplanted pike caught in the flooding to shoepac, negating the trout and eventually the DNR gave up, Northern Michigan fishing lore I’m sure… we have a lifetime of stories about our times at shoepac lake.

This is a review/photos of the sinkhole pathway. You really can’t see sinkholes. It just looks like a deep valley.

In the late 50’s and early 60’s my family would go here and stay for two or three weeks at a time. My dad and uncle would fish for bullheads all night then clean and cook them up. We stayed in tents, there were at least six kids with mom and dad. Wonderful times. Need to see it all again and soon as I am now almost 73 y/o!

Was wonderful...lots of trails for hiking...near the sinkhole pathway. Lake was beautiful and great to swim, kayak, or fish in. Bathrooms were clean...most campsites are very large. Will camp there again!!
