About Traverse City State Park Campground

Campground in Michigan.

Located along the pristine shores of Grand Traverse Bay in northern Michigan, this state park campground offers a genuine escape into one of the Great Lakes region's most beautiful destinations. The park provides direct access to some of the most stunning natural scenery in Michigan, where rolling sand dunes meet the crystal-clear waters of the bay. Campers wake up to breathtaking water views and can spend their days exploring miles of scenic shoreline, swimming in the refreshing bay waters, or simply relaxing on the sandy beach.

The Traverse City area has earned a stellar reputation as a premier destination for outdoor enthusiasts and those seeking authentic Michigan charm. This region is world-renowned for its wine country, with dozens of wineries and vineyards nestled throughout the surrounding valleys and hillsides. Wine tasting tours are a popular activity for visitors, offering a sophisticated complement to your camping experience. Beyond the vineyards, the area boasts excellent hiking trails, mountain biking opportunities, and water sports ranging from kayaking to sailing.

For those interested in cultural attractions and dining, downtown Traverse City is just minutes away and offers a vibrant community with art galleries, antique shops, farm-to-table restaurants, and local breweries. The town hosts numerous seasonal events and festivals throughout the year that draw visitors from across the country. The famous National Cherry Festival takes place here annually, celebrating the region's agricultural heritage.

The campground's location provides excellent access to both water-based recreation and inland exploration. Fishing enthusiasts will appreciate opportunities for walleye, perch, and other Great Lakes species. Nature lovers can explore the nearby dunes and forests, spotting native wildlife and enjoying the region's diverse ecosystems. The bay itself creates a moderate climate that keeps summers pleasant and perfect for outdoor camping.

Whether you're seeking a relaxing beach retreat, an active outdoor adventure, or a combination of both, this location offers the perfect Michigan getaway for RV travelers of all types.

I'd probably say 3.5 is more appropriate but we'll round it up to 4 because of the amenities. The campground itself is very nice, very clean and laid out well. The spots themselves are nice size and each spot comes with its own electric panel, which is super nice. The showers are amazing, probably the best ones I have ever seen at a campground and the restrooms were clean, they only use hand dryer... The spots themselves are nice size and each spot comes with its own electric panel, which is super nice. The showers are amazing, probably the best ones I have ever seen at a campground and the restrooms were clean, they only use hand dryers so there is no paper mess. It's also very nice because out the backside of the campground is a walking path you can use to get to Traverse City or Acme and in the front of the campground is a walking path that goes over the busy road and direct to the beach of Lake Michigan. Throughout the campground every so often they have clean water spickets you can use which is nice that you don't ever have to walk to far potable water. They also have a few small, 1-2 person cabins to rent at the front of the campground. The drawbacks would be the amount of people, there are over 400 sites at this campground and it can feel a little crowded but it was too too bad. Secondly, it's pretty near the airport so you hear the planes coming and going, most of the time they aren't too big but probably 3 or 4 times a day you'll get a bigger one that makes a lot of noise, woke me up one night. And it's right off a very main, busy road so it can be hard getting out sometimes and can contribute to unwanted noise if you're towards the front of the campground. Overall, not a bad spot to "camp" if you're visiting. It rained pretty bad on us one night and we woke up sleeping on a water bed, tent held up tho, nothing got wet.

What a wonderful park! Yes, it's close to the main road, and you will get road noise, so we always try to stay towards the back of the park, but you should know that going in, and prepare accordingly. The staff here was amazing! The bathrooms and showers were very well maintained and clean. There is easy access to the beach across the road, but be warned, they do not allow dogs on the beach in... We love to take our dogs to the beach (on leash of course), and we were sad they weren't allowed there. But other then that, this was a beautiful park. The trees here are huge, and most of the sites are nice and shaded. We really enjoyed ourselves here!

This park was nice. The only bad thing I can say is it gets packed on the weekend and you feel like you're packed in like sardines. The other bad was how they placed the firepits. The sight behind us their firepit was right at the back of our rv ( you can see in one of the photos I posted) so the smoke was coming in the rv everytime we opened the door! It made us feel like they were hanging out in... This park was nice. The only bad thing I can say is it gets packed on the weekend and you feel like you're packed in like sardines. On a good note during the week it was not as many people so it was enjoyable.

There is also a long hotel that blocks the view of the lake. This was not the camping experience we were hoping for. The Campground was nice. I only went to the newer bathroom/shower house but it was nice and clean.
