About Kabetogama State Forest - Wakemup Bay Campground

Campground in Minnesota.

Nestled in the heart of northern Minnesota's pristine wilderness, Wakemup Bay Campground offers RV enthusiasts an authentic escape into nature's quiet embrace. This intimate public campground features just 22 sites, ensuring a peaceful retreat far from the crowds you'll find at larger facilities. The setting within Kabetogama State Forest puts you in the midst of one of Minnesota's most treasured natural areas, where dense forests, sparkling waters, and abundant wildlife create an immersive outdoor experience.

The Kabetogama Peninsula region is renowned for its stunning natural beauty and recreational opportunities. The area's lakes and waterways are perfect for fishing, boating, and paddling, with walleye, northern pike, and panfish attracting anglers from across the region. The cooler northern Minnesota climate makes summer visits particularly refreshing, offering relief from heat and humidity while providing ideal conditions for outdoor exploration. The forest itself invites hiking, wildlife observation, and photography, with opportunities to spot moose, deer, black bears, and numerous bird species throughout the seasons.

Location-wise, you're positioned to explore the legendary Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and the surrounding lakes that define this region's character. Voyageurs National Park is nearby, offering additional opportunities for boat tours, camping, and learning about the area's rich fur trading heritage. The closest towns provide essential services and supplies, though the campground's remote location is precisely what makes it special for those seeking solitude and connection with nature.

This campground appeals particularly to fishing enthusiasts, nature photographers, paddlers, and anyone seeking a genuine wilderness experience without venturing too far from basic RV amenities. The small number of sites means you'll enjoy a community feel while still maintaining privacy among the towering pines. Whether you're planning a week-long fishing expedition, a photography adventure capturing Minnesota's natural grandeur, or simply a quiet retreat under the stars, Wakemup Bay Campground provides the perfect base for your northern Minnesota adventure.

Really nice beach area and a nice little dock to cast from. Blue gill bite like crazy, even caught a little northern.

Picked a rather damp weekend, but the campground itself was wonderful. Our spot was tucked back from the road near the top of the hill. Very well attended by the camp hosts. Lots of campers; we saw only a few open sites. Trails to explore and small beach and picnic area. Lots of boat traffic, so I assume boaters love it. Will definitely go again!

Friendly Host, awesome layout with 20 sites along the road going up to the top of the hill. We were lucky enough to stay in #20 at the top which has a back path to the lake. Lake access is superb with a few docks and awesome sunsets.
