About Rice Lake

This is one of our Backcountry sites which is a near- wilderness single party site and is accessible only by foot or boat. These sites are first come, first served. There are 2 sites on this lake, each have a fire grate, a latrine and may have a picnic table. A few reminders: Hang food packs, put your fire out each time you leave your campsite, treat or boil all water, wash yourself and dishes at least 150ft from any body of water, pack out all garbage and Leave No Trace. Use a Forest Map to

Rice Lake Public Campground offers a serene escape into Minnesota's natural landscape, where visitors can experience authentic north woods camping at its finest. Located in a region renowned for its pristine waters and abundant wildlife, this destination appeals to families, fishing enthusiasts, and nature lovers seeking a peaceful retreat away from the hustle of everyday life.

The campground provides excellent access to Rice Lake itself, a beautiful body of water that serves as the centerpiece of the outdoor experience here. Whether you're an angler hoping to cast a line for walleye, northern pike, or other freshwater species, or simply someone who enjoys the tranquility of lakeside camping, Rice Lake delivers on both fronts. The clear waters and well-maintained shoreline create an inviting atmosphere for swimming, boating, and paddling during the warmer months.

Minnesota's north woods setting means you'll be surrounded by towering pines and dense forests that provide natural shade and a genuine connection to the outdoors. Early mornings bring the sounds of loons across the water and songbirds in the trees, while evenings offer opportunities to enjoy campfires and stargazing. The relatively remote location keeps crowds manageable, allowing for a more intimate camping experience even during peak season.

The area surrounding Rice Lake offers additional outdoor recreation opportunities. Hiking trails wind through nearby forests, and the region's network of interconnected waterways makes it popular with canoeists and kayakers. Birdwatchers will find plenty of avian activity year-round, and those interested in wildlife photography will appreciate the diverse ecosystem.

Rice Lake Public Campground is particularly well-suited for RV travelers seeking a balance between accessibility and natural beauty. The campground welcomes those wanting to unplug while still enjoying the comfort of their RV home base. With strong ratings from past visitors, this destination has proven its appeal to the camping community and continues to attract repeat visitors who appreciate quality facilities and genuine natural surroundings.

I am not sure why the bad reviews. We stayed here with our 43’ 5th wheel and had a great overnight stay. The staff were super friendly and the sites were large, quiet, with no immediate neighbours. We had water and hydro and the dump was easy to access on your way out. We saw a turtle laying eggs and managed to get some great video. It was a short walk to the lake but there is a LOT of rules... Showers do not cost anything more just need to take turns when busy. We never had to wait though. Beach is excellent lake is clean and there is a boat ramp. Bring your water toys. Trust me being a native of the twin cities, you can drive farther and do worse.

I have been going for years to this camp ground. It's a nice little getaway if you live in the cities. Fishing spots all over, a few bait shops in the area. Customer service has always been pleasant in the town. The little area for the camping spots are just right. Great place to stay when in the area. We made reservations several months before we went, then kept telling ourselves we left on Thursday. We were actually supposed to leave Wednesday. PS, also loved the site, playground, beach, and all areas of the campground!

We had Deer come through our campsite. What a peaceful place to stay. We will definitely be back when we can stay longer. Taking a walk on the entrance road during the construction was reminiscent of Hazzard County with the Duke boys straightening the curves and flattening the hills. “Friends and neighbors, traffic moves fast ‘round these parts.”
