Will have to park by the dumpster and trails, then walk to the campsite. Called the Governor Knowles State Park Headquarters if they could open the gate so we could at least unpack, they said they will come up- no one ever showed up. No biggie tho, we managed unpacking regardless. Trails were nice but no good views, just an endless trail. I don’t recommend swimming at the river tho, it does feel slightly oily. Also beware of bugs and ticks! We had to do constant checks due to ticks. Closest city is Danbury, 10 minutes away if anything is needed. Round Lake is perfect for swimming, 10 minutes away. Overall, great place to camp still.

I've been camping at the awesome Sioux Portage Group Camp since 1984 when it was tent-only camping, you had to pump water up using an ancient, manual pump jack from a very deep well, and Dan was still The Main Man and All Around Great Guy at the Grantsburg Ranger Station. I've been camping at the awesome Sioux Portage Group Camp since 1984 when it was tent-only camping, you had to pump water up using an ancient, manual pump jack from a very deep well, and Dan was still The Main Man and All Around Great Guy at the Grantsburg Ranger Station. Now, 40 years later, Sioux Portage is still an awesome state forest group camp with upgrades that allow for RVs and trailers while still being a great tent camping site. I hope to God that Dan retired healthy, happy, and wise in the knowledge that he kept hundreds, maybe thousands of campers and scouts feel happy, safe, and cared for like his own family. (I miss him.) Btw, the water that came from that old well was icy cold and wonderful, but nobody in their right mind volunteered to draw it more than once if they didn't have to.

The site was nice and wide. They should consider adding a swimming area by the river. They need to add an area to shower! The campsite needs better sign, as it can be confusing where to enter the campground.

Lots of space. Bring hammocks, lawn games, float toys, and shade tents!
