About Temperance River National Forest Campground

Campground in Minnesota.

Nestled along the scenic North Shore of Lake Superior in northeastern Minnesota, Temperance River National Forest Campground offers RV travelers an extraordinary gateway to one of America's most stunning natural landscapes. This campground sits in the heart of Superior National Forest, where ancient forests meet the dramatic waters of Lake Superior, creating an environment that captures the raw beauty of the Upper Midwest.

The Temperance River itself is the crown jewel of this area, famous for its breathtaking waterfalls and gorge carved through volcanic rock. The river's name comes from its relatively calm waters compared to nearby streams, and today it offers visitors opportunities for exploration, photography, and appreciation of geological wonders. The surrounding forest provides a lush canopy of birch, aspen, and evergreen trees that seem to touch the sky, while the forest floor is carpeted with native vegetation that changes beautifully through the seasons.

This location is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts who want to experience true North Shore character without sacrificing comfort. Hikers will find exceptional trails in the immediate vicinity, including pathways that lead to spectacular viewpoints and waterfalls. The cool, fresh air and absence of summer crowds that plague more commercial destinations make this an excellent choice for those seeking peace and rejuvenation. Photographers will discover endless opportunities to capture the interplay of water, rock, and forest light, particularly during sunrise and sunset hours.

The broader area offers rich cultural experiences as well. The North Shore region is dotted with charming small towns, local shops, and excellent restaurants that celebrate regional cuisine and craftsmanship. Lake Superior itself presents countless recreational opportunities, and the scenic Arrowhead region attracts visitors from around the world who seek authentic Minnesota wilderness experiences.

Whether you're a seasoned camper familiar with Minnesota's Superior National Forest or discovering the North Shore for the first time, Temperance River National Forest Campground provides an authentic base for exploring one of the Midwest's most cherished natural areas. The combination of exceptional scenery, outdoor recreation, and that distinctive North Shore atmosphere makes this destination memorable for RV travelers of all types.

The campground was very quiet with a clean outhouse and access to potable water. It was only $18 a night. Small with only 8 or 9 sites. $18 per night. Rustic with one outhouse. Sites are not super close together, but you will hear your neighbor every time they open a car door or laugh. This place stinks, don't go here! Ok I'm being selfish...I don't want you to all flock there. Just spent two great nights here. Website said campground was in winter non-fee status and would be unplowed. Pleasantly the main drag was plowed, but the banks were pretty high. Also found the vault toilet door unlocked and useable. Website said campground was in winter non-fee status and would be unplowed. Pleasantly the main drag was plowed, but the banks were pretty high. Also found the vault toilet door unlocked and useable. Lots of snow! Dug out our fire pit, setup camp. Fell asleep to the Temperance running next to us. We could hear a couple of vehicles pass the campground that were on the Sawbill but not bad at all. One nice thing is that this campground is right at the end of the blacktop on the Sawbill. Roads were clear all the way up to it. We had set out to stay at Baker Lake but drove and drove and could never find signage so we turned back. This was a great option for winter camping!!

We stopped here for a night on the way to the BWCAW. Quiet, clean campsites, on the river.

Off the beaten path, this was the perfect "roughing it" campground. Just steps from the Temperance River, the sound of the flowing water made for an easy sleep. Fresh water spigot and pit toilet were the only amenities. My dog and I had a great time.
