About Interstate State Park WI - South Campground

Campground in Minnesota.

Nestled along the scenic St. Croix River Valley, Interstate State Park's South Campground offers RV travelers an exceptional gateway to one of the Midwest's most visually stunning natural areas. This Minnesota state park camping destination captures the raw beauty of glacially carved landscapes, dramatic river bluffs, and dense forests that have made this region a favorite among outdoor enthusiasts for generations.

The South Campground provides a peaceful base for exploring a landscape shaped by Ice Age geology. Towering sandstone cliffs rise majestically from the river, creating dramatic vistas that change throughout the day as light plays across the rock formations. For those traveling with RVs, the location offers convenient access to both natural attractions and charming regional communities. The area surrounding the park features small towns with local character, farm stands, and family-owned restaurants where visitors can experience genuine Midwestern hospitality. The St. Croix River itself is a major draw, offering opportunities for scenic drives along the water, picnicking at designated areas, and taking in views that have inspired visitors for over a century.

The campground serves as an excellent home base for exploring the broader region. Adventure seekers can enjoy hiking trails ranging from easy riverside walks to more challenging terrain with elevation changes and panoramic views. The park's location makes it accessible for day trips to nearby attractions, shopping, and dining while maintaining that coveted sense of being nestled in nature.

I loved our site on the water. It was very pretty. We walked the amazing river trail. It was beautiful even in a heavy April rain. The railroad trail was cool but got really close to the road with no roadblock which cramped the natural beauty.

Interstate Park Campground (North) is a lovely camping location, with electric hookups, fairly level spots, and plenty of space between sites. Each site has a picnic table and a fire ring. We had a site with a view of the river past the trees. The campground was clean and well maintained. We loved this campground due largely to the beautiful location on the St. Croix River, miles of hiking trails... We loved this campground due largely to the beautiful location on the St. Croix River, miles of hiking trails, and proximity to the towns of St. Croix Falls (WI) and Taylor Falls (MN). We were able to walk to both towns to explore, shop, and eat. We were also able to hike the Interstate Park on both sides of the river. It was a quick 10-minute hike from the north campground to the state fishery and to 'Be Wild Burgers', a great burger joint open for lunch.

One of my family's favorite campgrounds to stay at. Unfortunately you get a few people who have no camping etiquette these days, don't let it ruin your stay. This campground is beautiful. Facilities aren't bad. It has several buildings and areas where you can get large groups together. Lots of trails in the campground but access to all the park trails from the campground as well. Very nice campground, has all the amenities for camping. If it wasn't for the highway noise, I would have given 5 stars.

Sites are small. The higher numbered sites are on a slight hill, so lots of blocks to get level. Quiet, great staff. Bathrooms need updating, old, iron stained, not very appealing. Water at dumpstation needs fixing.
