About Firehole Springs

Campground in Montana.

Firehole Springs offers an intimate camping experience in the heart of Montana's geothermal wonderland. This small public campground with just six sites provides the perfect balance between accessibility and peaceful solitude, making it an ideal destination for travelers seeking authentic Montana wilderness without the crowds of larger facilities.

Located in the Madison area of southwestern Montana, Firehole Springs sits in one of the most geologically fascinating regions of North America. The campground's proximity to Yellowstone National Park makes it an excellent base for exploring the world's first national park, with the park's western entrance just a short drive away. The geothermal features that give this area its character create a unique landscape where hot springs and colorful mineral deposits dot the terrain, offering visitors a glimpse into the Earth's powerful natural processes.

The intimate size of Firehole Springs means you'll experience a quieter, more personal camping adventure compared to sprawling RV parks. With only six sites, the campground maintains a relaxed atmosphere where you can truly disconnect and enjoy the Montana outdoors. This setup is particularly appealing for those who prefer a more rustic experience while still having access to basic camping facilities.

The surrounding area offers remarkable opportunities for outdoor recreation and natural exploration. Hiking trails throughout the region range from easy walks to more challenging backcountry adventures, with stunning views of geothermal features and wildlife habitat. The Madison River and surrounding waterways provide excellent opportunities for fishing, a beloved activity for many RV travelers exploring this corner of Montana.

This location appeals to a diverse range of travelers. Nature enthusiasts and photographers will find endless subjects in the unique geothermal landscape. Adventure seekers appreciate the proximity to Yellowstone and the countless exploration opportunities. Families enjoy the manageable size of the campground and the educational value of experiencing geothermal geology firsthand. Retirees and couples seeking a peaceful retreat find the quiet atmosphere and natural beauty particularly appealing.

The area's elevation and location mean visitors can expect cool, crisp Montana air and clear night skies perfect for stargazing. Summer visits offer warm days ideal for outdoor activities, while shoulder seasons provide a more serene experience with fewer other travelers. The campground's small size and location make it a cherished destination for those who have discovered it, consistently earning strong reviews from satisfied visitors.

We absolutely loved our visit to Yellowstone Hot Springs. It was our second time and the setting is incredibly beautiful, peaceful, and well maintained, and the staff were genuinely kind and welcoming. It’s a really special spot and we would return. Our one year old unfortunately picked up norovirus after our visit, which of course can happen anywhere with shared water spaces, but it’s worth being cautious. Just something to keep in mind so others can enjoy this lovely place as safely as possible.

Stunning Views They checked and recorded the water temperature every hour. There was no sulfur smell and we felt amazing with the minerals. The weekend guy Gary was so knowledgeable about the hot spring process. If we are ever within 100 miles of Yellowstone Hot Springs we will be making a stop here.

While we did not stay at Yellowstone Hot Springs, We rented a larger VRBO in Gardner that was only 7 mi from the hot springs. We still soaked twice a day because it was close enough from Gardner and we even had children under two with us. Very clean, very affordable and we will definitely be back. You can buy a pass for I believe 12 visits that brings the cost down to about $10 each. The changi... It was so nice to be able to see the trees and the mountains and the landscape while you're soaking, beautiful in the morning, beautiful at night. Will go again.

The hot springs are incredible 😍. There is no sulfur smell and the place is super clean. Make sure to bring some kind of sandal so you don't hurt your feet walking to and from the locker room to the pools. We will definitely be back!!
