About Libby Area

The Libby Area has the Kootenai River from Libby Dam to Troy running through the heart of it.  The Kootenai River is identified as a “blue ribbon trout stream”.  The Purcell Range is located north of the River and features numerous peaks at 6000’ elevation.  Turner Mountain Ski Area is located 22 miles north of Libby, providing 2200’ of vertical and 1000 acres of terrain for alpine skiing.  The Cabinet Mountains are located south of the River with many peaks at 7500’ elevation.  Snowshoe Peak at...

Nestled in the heart of northwestern Montana, the Libby Area campground offers a genuine escape into the rugged beauty of the Northern Rockies. This public campground serves as an ideal base for travelers seeking to explore one of Montana's most scenic and underdeveloped regions, where vast forests meet mountain vistas and outdoor adventure awaits at every turn.

Libby itself is a charming small town with genuine Montana character. Founded during the mining era, the town has evolved into a gateway community for outdoor enthusiasts while maintaining its authentic frontier spirit. The surrounding landscape is dominated by the majestic Cabinet Mountains and the pristine waters of Lake Koocanusa, a 90-mile-long reservoir that provides stunning recreational opportunities including fishing, boating, and scenic cruising. The sheer scale and tranquility of this alpine lake creates a peaceful atmosphere that feels worlds away from crowded tourist destinations.

The area is a paradise for anglers, with excellent fishing opportunities for kokanee salmon, rainbow trout, and bull trout throughout the region. Hikers will discover an extensive network of trails ranging from gentle riverside walks to challenging mountain summits, many offering panoramic views that showcase the dramatic peaks and dense forests characteristic of this corner of Montana. The nearby Kootenai National Forest provides thousands of acres for exploration, with opportunities for wildlife viewing including elk, deer, and occasional grizzly bears in their natural habitat.

For those interested in local history and culture, Libby offers modest but meaningful attractions including the Heritage Museum, which tells the story of the region's mining heritage and indigenous peoples. The town provides essential services and supplies, ensuring that your camping trip includes all necessary conveniences without the overwhelming infrastructure of larger destinations.

The Libby Area is perfect for travelers seeking solitude, natural beauty, and authentic outdoor experiences. Whether you're an angler hoping to land a trophy catch, a hiker seeking wilderness trails, or simply someone wanting to disconnect and breathe fresh mountain air, this region delivers an unforgettable Montana camping experience away from the mainstream tourist circuit.

It is a nice RV stop with beautiful wooded camp sites and a community fire pit. Facilities are well maintained, most sites offer at least some shade. Bathrooms are clean. The shower heads look sketch, but actually produce a nice volume of water, and there seems to be plenty of hot water too. The only ding I have is that there are train tracks nearby with frequent trains throughout the night. But... It is a nice RV stop with beautiful wooded camp sites and a community fire pit. The shower heads look sketch, but actually produce a nice volume of water, and there seems to be plenty of hot water too. The only ding I have is that there are train tracks nearby with frequent trains throughout the night. But this is probably true for most places in Libby because of the geography. There are services within about 10 minutes walking distance. Oh - and the wood sculptures are amazing!

Great spot to stay. Nice and quiet with very clean sites. The restrooms were well maintained and the location was close to everything we needed while feeling like you are miles away from everything. Will definitely stay here anytime we are in the area

The campsites were very clean, well maintained and spacious. We backed into site #15 and loved being away from the road. We will definitely be back. Highly recommend. There are a few fun things to see which include the Dam, the swinging bridge over the river and many places to fish.
