About Upper Firehole

Campground in Montana.

Upper Firehole Public Campground offers a secluded Montana camping experience in one of the state's most scenic regions. This intimate facility with just six sites provides the perfect retreat for RV travelers seeking a quieter alternative to busier campgrounds while still maintaining convenient access to some of Montana's most spectacular natural attractions.

Nestled in the heart of Montana's wilderness, Upper Firehole captures the essence of backcountry camping with the comfort of an RV. The small size of this campground means you'll enjoy a peaceful atmosphere without the crowds, making it an ideal choice for families, couples, and nature enthusiasts who prioritize tranquility. The limited number of sites ensures that neighbors aren't cramped together, allowing for a more private camping experience where you can truly disconnect and unwind.

The surrounding landscape is genuinely spectacular. Montana's natural beauty unfolds in every direction, with opportunities for hiking, fishing, and wildlife viewing right from your campground. The region's forests provide shaded camping spots, and the cooler mountain air creates comfortable sleeping conditions even during warmer months. Early mornings and evenings showcase the area's incredible wildlife activity, with opportunities to observe deer, elk, and various bird species.

This location serves as an excellent base for exploring Montana's outdoor treasures. The nearby Firehole area offers excellent fishing opportunities, particularly for those interested in fly fishing in pristine mountain streams. Hiking trails range from easy walks suitable for all fitness levels to more challenging backcountry routes for experienced adventurers. The relatively undeveloped nature of the surrounding area means you're camping in a genuine wilderness setting while still being within reasonable driving distance of supplies and services.

Upper Firehole attracts travelers who value authenticity over amenities, those seeking to escape the commercialized campground experience, and outdoor enthusiasts who want to maximize their time in nature. Anglers will particularly appreciate the proximity to quality fishing waters, while photographers and nature lovers find endless inspiration in the surrounding landscapes. The campground's modest size makes it popular with RV travelers who prefer intimate outdoor experiences and don't need extensive on-site facilities.

Whether you're planning an extended Montana adventure or a quick weekend getaway into the mountains, Upper Firehole provides a genuine base camp for authentic wilderness exploration. The combination of proximity to natural attractions, peaceful surroundings, and quality outdoor access makes this public campground a worthwhile stop for RV travelers exploring Montana's vast outdoor offerings.

After spending all day in the park and eating dinner we were exhausted and trying to find an open RV park at 10 pm. Pony Express were very accommodating and open with flat sights and full hook-ups. Also didn’t charge for late check out and reasonable $$ compared to other sites. Thank you for your hospitality 😊

We stayed here last month for one night for our trip through Yellowstone. Incredibly convenient location in town and mere minutes away from the west gate. Clean showers were included along with water, power, and sewer to our site at a very reasonable rate. Will definitely be choosing to stay here next time we come through.

Level sites accommodating Class C and below. Clean facilities and friendly staff. Walking distance of downtown. We used campsite as a hub to sleep as we explored the area. Easy access to west gate of Yellowstone National Park. Competitive rates.

Location. Pretty level. Very Walkable to town, bike trail, and the Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center. Good value. Watch your belongings in the very clean bathhouse. They could improve security with some exterior cameras, and actual doors rather than curtains on their shower stalls. Someone tried to steal pants from the shower stall. Some (very odd and unfriendly) occupants let others into the bath... Some (very odd and unfriendly) occupants let others into the bathhouse. Not cool, and a security issue. The night we were there there was a domestic disturbance between two separate site occupants. We called the front desk, others (multiple others) called the cops. After that, things were quiet and peaceful. In any town location like this I would be more cognizant to keep things locked up and or put away out of sight. Note that check in is handled in the hotel on the main drag.

The RV park was a perfect home base while we visited Yellowstone. The bathrooms and showers are clean. There is a city park across the street that was perfect for walking our dogs. We were not looking for amenities as we spent all day in YNP and GTNP and we were very pleased with this quiet area to sleep. Front desk staff were very helpful, as well.
