About Upper Gallatin River

Campground in Montana.

Upper Gallatin River Campground offers an intimate camping experience in the heart of Montana's spectacular mountain landscape. With just ten sites nestled along the scenic Gallatin River, this public campground provides the perfect blend of accessibility and authentic wilderness immersion. The location puts you directly on one of Montana's most cherished waterways, a river famous for its crystal-clear waters and excellent fishing opportunities throughout the season.

The Gallatin River valley has captivated outdoor enthusiasts for generations, and staying at Upper Gallatin River Campground allows you to understand why. The surrounding terrain features dramatic mountain vistas, dense forest coverage, and abundant wildlife viewing opportunities. Eagles, deer, and various bird species are commonly spotted by campers enjoying morning coffee or evening relaxation. The river itself provides a constant, soothing backdrop and serves as the focal point for many visitors' daily activities.

This location proves ideal for anglers, whether you're a seasoned fly fisher or just beginning to explore the sport. The Gallatin River is renowned for its healthy population of cutthroat and rainbow trout, and the campground's direct river access makes it a dream for those wanting to fish at dawn or dusk. Even non-anglers appreciate the meditative quality of watching the river flow and observing its natural rhythms throughout the day.

Beyond river activities, the campground serves as an excellent base for exploring the broader Gallatin Valley region. Hiking trails of varying difficulty levels abound in the surrounding national forest lands, offering everything from leisurely riverside walks to challenging mountain ridge hikes. The area's natural hot springs, scenic overlooks, and wildlife viewing areas are all within reasonable driving distance.

The small size of this campground means it maintains a peaceful, uncrowded atmosphere that larger facilities simply cannot match. You'll find yourself surrounded by fellow nature lovers who appreciate quiet mornings and genuine connections to the landscape. The public campground designation makes it an accessible option for those seeking quality Montana camping without resort-style amenities and associated price points.

We really enjoyed our stay here. The giant trees and grassy area was so nice. It was hot when we stayed and the trees allowed us to stay cool and enjoy the outdoors. I do wish they had a dumpster for guests to use. I understand we’re basically staying in a yard, but I felt guilty adding my garbage bags to the residential trash can on the property. It was nice and quiet, and Cookie, the dog on the property, was both adorable and respectful. She kept her distance while we walked our dog, but would come say hi to our kids, much to their delight. We even saw a bald eagle steal a fish from an osprey and eat it right on the property. It was pretty epic.

Absolutely an Amazing stay with the folks. Our host was incredibly accommodating in helping us in advance with our stay. Highly recommended, out in the country, away from it all!

I prefer out of the way and less traveled places, and this most definitely fits the bill. If you’re tired of the same old thing and want to actually enjoy some peace and quiet, this is a great place. Beautiful views and easy access from I-90, with whatever you need a stone’s throw away in Manhattan.

One of my favorite campsites in the valley! We have stayed here twice. We are moving east coast and have some things to wrap up before leaving and have found this place to be so reasonable and FULL hookups! Highly recommend!

We are here now and have been for 6 days. It is lovely! It is very easy to find from the interstate and easy to drive to on paved roads. It's quick to get to Belgrade or Bozeman for what you need or want to see. The 4 sites are truly nice and the big trees provide shade. Everything is well kept and clean.
