About HUNTERS SPRING CABIN

Federal campground in Montana.

Nestled in the heart of Montana's pristine national forest landscape, Hunters Spring Cabin offers RV travelers an authentic escape into the natural world. This national forest campground serves as the perfect base camp for adventurers seeking to explore some of Montana's most spectacular wilderness areas while maintaining the comfort and convenience of their RV home base.

The Montana national forests represent some of the last truly wild places in America, and camping here puts you directly in the heart of that rugged beauty. The towering ponderosa pines, crystal-clear mountain air, and vast open spaces create an atmosphere where the pressures of daily life simply melt away. Whether you're watching the sunrise paint the mountain peaks or stargazing under impossibly dark skies far from city lights, every moment spent at this national forest location reminds you why people fall in love with RV camping in the American West.

For outdoor enthusiasts, the opportunities are virtually endless. Hunters Spring's location provides excellent access to hiking trails ranging from gentle forest walks to challenging alpine adventures. Mountain biking trails crisscross the surrounding terrain, offering thrilling rides through dense forests and across open meadows. Fishing enthusiasts will find pristine streams and lakes where trout fishing remains exceptional. Wildlife viewing is a daily occurrence, with opportunities to spot elk, deer, and a variety of bird species in their natural habitat.

The national forest setting means you're surrounded by thousands of acres of protected lands managed for recreation and conservation. This creates a peaceful, undeveloped environment that draws visitors seeking solitude and authentic nature experiences. Many guests find the slower pace and simpler pleasures of forest camping to be exactly what they need, whether for a quick weekend getaway or an extended stay.

This is ideal camping for families wanting to introduce children to outdoor adventures, retirees pursuing a slower lifestyle, and experienced RVers seeking to explore Montana's remote backcountry. The campground serves as an excellent launching point for longer road trips through the state's scenic byways and access to larger wilderness areas.

The cabin itself was absolutely filthy and I'm not one to be picky for forest service cabins as I rent a couple per year and understand the cabin environment. Shame on past few renters, I can say no one had cleaned it upon leaving their reservation for quite some time. The fridge could not be turned on, which is fine but maybe just take off the website that there is no fridge. There was mice poop... Shame on past few renters, I can say no one had cleaned it upon leaving their reservation for quite some time. The fridge could not be turned on, which is fine but maybe just take off the website that there is no fridge. There was mice poop and dead flies everywhere and the people before had left trash in random places, like clothes in the fire ring and trash behind the wood stack. Outhouses are nasty anyway, but this one was so disgusting- it had not been maintained or cleaned in a while, or the people before had some major issues and hopefully went to the ER. Maybe that's why it was left so dirty? Out of control but I wish there was a bigger creek nearby, although there is a tiny spring creek but that seeped in the ground and there are spots that are constantly super muddy all over the driveway and yard. There appears to be a water hose from the spring but we couldn't figure out how to turn it on, or maybe it was too early. This area has HEAVY ATV use, so if that's not your thing you wont enjoy the noise/traffic. The scenery is beautiful but unfortunately the people before, and likely many groups before, were careless and rude. Id like to see the forest service up there to do some updates, its definitely in need. And if you rent a cabin leave it in better condition than when you arrived, be respectful.

A beautiful cozy little cabin! Had some great times here. I would not advise following directions from recreation.gov tho. If I was to give someone directions from White Sulfur Springs, I would tell them head east on hwy 12. Six miles past the small town of Checkerboard you will see fs road 274(Spring Creek) turn north up this road and continue on the main road for 12 miles. You will come to White... The cabin is 1/4 mile past this on the right. Great location in a beautiful area. Enjoy!
