About Mammoth Campground (Yellowstone)

Federal campground in Montana.

Nestled in the heart of Yellowstone National Park, Mammoth Campground offers RV travelers an extraordinary opportunity to experience one of America's most iconic natural wonders. Located near the historic Mammoth Hot Springs area in the northern section of the park, this campground serves as an ideal base for exploring the geothermal features, wildlife viewing opportunities, and scenic landscapes that make Yellowstone legendary.

The campground's proximity to Mammoth Hot Springs means you'll have easy access to one of the park's most visually stunning attractions. The terraces of Mammoth Hot Springs are among the most dynamic features in Yellowstone, constantly changing as mineral-rich hot water flows down the mountainside, creating otherworldly formations in shades of white, orange, and brown. A short walk from your RV site can have you marveling at these natural sculptures that have captivated visitors for generations.

Beyond Mammoth, the northern loop of Yellowstone opens up endless exploration opportunities. The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, with its dramatic waterfalls and colorful canyon walls, is within reasonable driving distance. The Lamar Valley, often called the Serengeti of North America, is a premier destination for wildlife viewing where bison, elk, wolves, and grizzly bears roam freely. Early morning and evening drives through these areas offer some of the best chances to encounter Yellowstone's famous inhabitants.

The location is perfect for those seeking to deeply immerse themselves in Yellowstone's natural wonders while enjoying the comfort and convenience of their own RV. Whether you're passionate about geology and geothermal features, wildlife photography, hiking, or simply soaking in the majesty of one of the world's first national parks, Mammoth Campground provides a comfortable home base for creating unforgettable memories. The cooler northern section of the park offers a pleasant climate for summer camping, and the stark beauty of the landscape shifts dramatically with the seasons, providing a unique experience throughout the year.

Great campground, well maintained. Hosts are friendly and amenities are great. Only issue I take is generator hours shutting you down at 8pm. Better have good batteries or solar generator to get you through the evening. Bathrooms were great. Make sure to obey bear rules, otherwise they will cite you. Otherwise great location, real close to Gardiner. Kind of a windy road but it has stuff if you need it.

Love this park! It's close to the Mammoth hot springs and is open all year round. We were at site #22. Great views and the sites are big enough for 30 ft trailers. Would definitely come back again for mid April (15th) when all the other parks and roads open up.

Love the tent pad, the easily accessible water and picnic benches. If there was anything to knock (and this is nitpicky) the tree coverage is fairly light though in fairness it is on the desert side of the park. Also it was a bit of a hike to deal with Grey water. We had a wonderful time though and the morning sun is shielded by the beautiful mountains. Birds and chipmunks are all over the place and sometimes there are visits from Elk in the campground. Hosts were great and it was very peaceful camping.
