I have never in my life experienced bison the way I did at Fort Niobrara! We were the only car on the loop and at one point we were completely surrounded. It was such a blessing and truly awe inspiring to see these amazing animals up close in their natural habitat. An unforgettable experience!

The wildlife refuge has a nice one mile hike with a waterfall but we didn't see any elk and the bison herd was very far away. Make sure to bring binoculars. Entrance is free. There is no camping available. Building at the visitor center was closed.

This is a wonderful place to stop and visit. There is a wide range of ecosystems and animals. The wildlife has prairie as well as coniferous and deciduous forests. There are bison, elk and bears in the area. It has a decentl wildlife drive and visitor center, great for kayaking. Valentine town and area is amazing. Niobrara is an oasis in the sand hills.

An absolutely beautiful place. If you’re looking for vacation ideas, this NWF as well as the rest of the Valentine area should be on your list. Great hikes here, relatively not busy (especially on the weekdays) and a great change of pace. This area is highly biodiverse and if you’re a nature nerd like me.. this is a MUST visit place as it has world class biodiversity.

What an amazing addition to our tubing trip on the Niobrara. After driving through the refuge on the way to tubing I researched the refuge and realized that we should probably check it all out the next day before we left. Its hard to fathom that where you're at is still in nebraska but it definitely is and it's something every visitor to valentine should check out at least once.
