About Cathedral Gorge State Park

Located near Panaca, Nevada, Cathedral Gorge State Park features 22 campsites in a scenic setting. This state park is a favorite among visitors seeking outdoor adventure and relaxation.

Nestled in the high desert valleys of northeastern Nevada, Cathedral Gorge State Park offers RV campers a unique escape into striking natural beauty and geological wonder. This intimate 22-site campground sits at the gateway to one of Nevada's most visually dramatic landscapes, where towering badlands formations rise dramatically from the desert floor in shades of rust, gold, and deep purple. The gorge itself is a masterpiece of erosion, carved over millennia into cathedral-like spires and narrow canyons that seem to touch the sky.

The camping experience here is wonderfully peaceful and uncrowded. Each site provides basic comfort with fire rings for evening campfires, picnic tables for meals with a view, and convenient access to well-maintained restrooms and hot showers. The park's dump station makes it easy to manage your RV systems, and the pet-friendly policy means your furry companions can enjoy this adventure alongside you. The nearby playground offers entertainment for younger travelers, while the peaceful desert setting provides the perfect backdrop for a restorative getaway.

Beyond your campsite, Cathedral Gorge invites exploration through its network of hiking trails that wind through the otherworldly badlands formations. The main Wall Street Trail is particularly popular, taking visitors through narrow canyon passages and past colorful rock walls. For those interested in water recreation, the park features a boat ramp and fishing opportunities, though these are seasonal depending on water levels. Whether you're standing in your campsite or hiking through the narrow canyons, you're surrounded by geological formations that tell the story of ancient lakes and dynamic natural processes.

The small town of Panaca nearby offers basic services and supplies, while the broader region provides access to other Nevada attractions. This location appeals to geology enthusiasts, nature photographers, quiet retreat seekers, and families wanting an authentic desert camping experience away from crowded tourist areas. The year-round accessibility means you can experience the unique magic of Cathedral Gorge in any season, from crisp desert winters to starlit summer nights.

A very interesting natural park with slot canyons and beautiful vistas of eroded stone formations. I spent about 2 hours exploring the slot canyons and taking photos of the surrounding views/birds. Lots more to do but I was short on time. Park rangers were helpful and friendly. Plenty of parking around 1pm on a weekday. I’d come again if I were in the area to do more hiking/exploring on the trai... A very interesting natural park with slot canyons and beautiful vistas of eroded stone formations. Plenty of parking around 1pm on a weekday. I’d come again if I were in the area to do more hiking/exploring on the trails in the northern part of the park. Also one of the cheaper state parks I’ve visited before at $10 USD for the day.

Great small state park with very unique geological formations. Easy to explore and spend 1hr to 2 days. Do NOT drive past Moon Canyon to get straight to Cathedral Canyon. Moon has much larger and longer slots than Cathedral to explore. Do the 4 mile hike that goes from Cathedral to Miller Point to Juniper. If you can’t hike 4 miles, drive to Miller Overlook and take the stairs down - it’s is real... Great small state park with very unique geological formations. Easy to explore and spend 1hr to 2 days. Also Miller Point is a great place to watch the sunset and have a picnic. Amazing pit toilets too! Best we have ever experienced. If you’re in this area, don’t overlook Echo Canyon, Spring Valley (best camping sites!) and Kershaw-Ryan State Parks! Hot Tea Pot Arch in Panaca too. Lovely add-ons to round out the day / weekend. I would have loved to do the loop hikes at kershaw but we didn’t leave enough time. Don’t make our mistake!

Easy to access location. The campground was very clean and neat. The main bathroom was closed for repairs, so it was a bit of a walk to get to the one that had the showers. The showers were nice and hot, 5 minutes for $0.25. It was nice to be able to explore the slots in the rocks formations freely.
