About Saco Ranger District

Located on the south eastern part of the forest, the District offers a variety of different recreational opportunities. Journey across the Kancamagus Scenic Byway; experience the famous Mt Chocorua area; find solitude in the Presidential Range-Dry River or Sandwich Wildernesses; or discover the beauty along Scenic Route 113. Recreational opportunities are endless: hiking, camping, hiking, biking, fishing, skiing (alpine, cross country, and backcountry), snowmobiling, snowshoeing and much more. ?

Nestled in the heart of New Hampshire's White Mountains, Saco Ranger District offers RV campers an authentic gateway to one of New England's most treasured natural landscapes. This national forest camping area provides the perfect basecamp for adventurers seeking to explore pristine wilderness while enjoying the comfort of their RV home on wheels.

The Saco Ranger District encompasses over 800,000 acres of stunning mountain terrain, with the Saco River serving as a central natural feature that has shaped the region for millennia. The elevation changes throughout the district create diverse ecosystems, from river valleys to high alpine peaks. Campers here find themselves surrounded by towering white pines, birch forests, and rocky outcrops that speak to the geological history of the Northeast. The air is crisp and clean, and the natural soundscape of flowing water and forest life provides a peaceful retreat from urban hustle.

This location appeals to a wide range of outdoor enthusiasts. Hikers will find hundreds of miles of trails ranging from gentle riverside walks to challenging mountain ascents. The nearby Presidential Range offers some of the most iconic hiking in the eastern United States. Fishing enthusiasts are drawn to the pristine waters where trout and other species thrive. Mountain bikers discover excellent trail networks, while photographers find endless opportunities to capture New England's natural beauty across all four seasons.

The ranger district's proximity to charming mountain towns means you're never far from supplies, restaurants, and local culture. Conway, North Conway, and other nearby communities offer a blend of outdoor outfitting shops, casual dining, and small-town New England charm. Visitors appreciate the balance between remote wilderness access and convenient amenities.

Whether you're visiting during the vibrant fall foliage season when the mountains ignite in brilliant reds and golds, the lush green summers perfect for water activities, or the quieter shoulder seasons, Saco Ranger District delivers an exceptional New Hampshire camping experience. The 4.3-star rating from nearly 500 reviewers reflects the consistent quality and appeal of this national forest destination.

We absolutely loved our stay here. So much that we extended our visit n extra day. The river was beautiful and it was warm enough two of the days to let the kids play in the water. If we’re ever back in New Hampshire we will definitely stay here again! The only “negative” I will say is our spot had a lot of mud/dirt so we put our camping rug out to help with keeping the tracking of mud inside down.

Perfect location. Clean and clear sites. Nestled in a quiet spot on the Saco River, close to all the attractions! Sierra was efficient and friendly and made the check in process easy, especially on a holiday weekend! Tim was so polite and helpful with our initial set up. Joe was friendly and welcoming! Will definitely return!

The wireless connections sucked and the cable did not work. So if you have small children who require watching some shows during down time this is not a good place. Access to Mount Washington and the White mountains was wonderful. Get off of the beaten path and you will find some nice shops and farmers markets. I give this campground a three stars mainly for the disappointment in the riverside site and wireless connection. Access points need to be lowered.

We stayed 2 nights in mid October in a back in site along the river. The campground is well maintained and easily accessible for our motorhome and tow vehicle. We were there to visit the Kancamagus Scenic Byway and Conway Scenic Railroad. The office staff was friendly and helpful. I highly recommend the Saco River Family Campground in North Conway, NY.
