About Gateway National Recreation Area - Sandy Hook Canoe Cruise

Overview:Gateway National Recreation Area's Sandy Hook is a barrier beach at the northern end of the New Jersey Shore. Its location at the entrance to New York Harbor assured Sandy Hook's importance for coastal and harbor defense. For more than 200 years most of the peninsula has been a federal reserve. The military presence both shaped Sandy Hook's history and assured its preservation as open space. During the summer, visitors enjoy swimming and strolling along the Sandy Hook beaches. Throughou

Gateway National Recreation Area encompasses one of the most remarkable coastal destinations in the northeastern United States, offering RV campers an extraordinary blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and recreational opportunity. Located strategically between New York and New Jersey, this expansive recreation area spans over 26,000 acres across multiple islands and peninsulas, making it a truly unique camping destination for those seeking to experience the gateway to America's most vibrant metropolitan region.

The Sandy Hook peninsula, a primary hub within Gateway, extends into the Atlantic Ocean and offers visitors an exceptional sense of being suspended between ocean and bay. The barrier peninsula creates a dramatic landscape where visitors can experience pristine beaches on one side and calm bay waters on the other. This geographical positioning means campers wake up to distinctive coastal light and spend their days exploring an environment shaped by centuries of tidal forces and natural coastal processes. The area's maritime heritage runs deep, with numerous historical structures and interpretive sites throughout the recreation area that tell the stories of early American settlement, commerce, and defense.

For those interested in water-based activities, the Sandy Hook Canoe Cruise experience provides an intimate way to explore the park's intricate waterways and marshlands. Paddling through these protected waters offers opportunities to observe diverse bird species, spot marine wildlife, and witness the interconnected ecosystems that make Gateway so ecologically important. The calm bay waters are ideal for paddlers of varying skill levels, from families seeking gentle afternoon outings to more experienced enthusiasts exploring remote coves and creeks.

The surrounding landscape features salt marshes, maritime forests, and sandy beaches that support diverse plant and animal communities. Nature enthusiasts will appreciate the genuine ecological significance of this area, which serves as a critical habitat for migratory birds and marine species. Throughout the year, different species can be observed during various seasons, making Gateway an excellent destination for wildlife photographers and birders.

Gateway's location provides convenient access to some of the region's most interesting attractions. Historic lighthouses stand as sentinels along the coast, and visitors can tour several of these iconic structures. The area's beaches are suitable for swimming during warmer months, and the broader New Jersey Shore is just a short drive away if you wish to explore additional coastal communities and attractions.

The recreation area appeals to history buffs, nature lovers, water sports enthusiasts, families seeking educational opportunities, and anyone who appreciates the raw beauty of coastal environments. Whether you're interested in kayaking peaceful waters, walking sandy beaches, exploring maritime history, or simply relaxing while watching the Atlantic horizon, this location offers a distinctive camping experience that captures the essence of the Jersey Shore in a more protected and historically rich setting.

Great tent-camping site. Nice knowing there won't be a generator roaring next door. Notes: lots of animals (raccoons and foxes), so use the "bear boxes" for all food and trash. Ocean-side beach parking NOT included, but bay side accessible and kind of more interesting anyway. If you want to access ocean beaches (which are nice) bring bikes--they're too far from camp to walk (or pay the extra to park). Very nice biking trails to explore the area. Cars not permitted at actual camp sites, but parking lot nearby (may fill up if busy). Well-lit central restroom facility with "flushies" but no showers. No electricity at sites but potable water nearby. No playgrounds. Some sites have picnic shelters. Plenty of poison ivy in parks but avoidable in camp. Must buy firewood there if you want a campfire (no gleaning/carry-in). No soda/snack machines (there are elsewhere in the park). 24-hr access to camp once registered (i.e., if you have to come and go during stay). Friendly rangers. My new favorite campground!

I stayed on July 13th, one of the last nights of 2025. The ranger mentioned that they were closing early this season because of the cockroach issues. I had no problem with them at all. I saw a couple of tiny little guys in the morning but nothing like other people have reported in previous reviews. I bike packed all my gear in, and set up camp in a shady spot under trees. Would recommend!

There are 20 tent sites spread across four loops. There is NO beach access. Some sites have shelters, others do not. Pay attention when reserving. All sites have a fire pit and picnic table. No electric, hook-ups, or showers. The nearby beaches have outdoor shower facilities though. The racoons are fierce. They will eat through your tent. Use the bear lockers provided to store anything scented. Activities abound: hit the beaches for (non-motorized) water sports or sunbathing (Gunnison is the nude beach), learn about the military history of the area on an NPS tour, visit the oldest working lighthouse in the US, walk or bike the multi-use trails, go birding, and more! Nearby Hartshorne Woods Park (Monmouth County Park System) has great hiking and mountain bike trails too.

Exceed expectations. Great location and safe. Even provided a cart to carry in heavy gear. Clean bathrooms at the camping and showers at the beach entrances. Bring a padlock for the bear boxes and have a secure place to leave stuff.
