About Gila Hot Springs Campground

Campground in New Mexico.

Nestled in the rugged beauty of southwestern New Mexico, Gila Hot Springs Campground offers a serene escape into one of the region's most captivating natural landscapes. This intimate public campground with its modest twelve sites provides the perfect basecamp for adventurers seeking authentic desert experiences without the crowds of larger commercial facilities.

The campground's location near the famous Gila Hot Springs puts you within easy reach of natural thermal pools where warm mineral-rich waters create a soothing retreat after days of exploration. There's something genuinely restorative about soaking in these naturally heated waters while surrounded by desert mountains and star-filled skies. The setting captures the essence of New Mexico's wild character, where civilization fades and nature takes center stage.

This area is renowned for its incredible hiking opportunities. The nearby Gila Wilderness contains some of the Southwest's most pristine trails, leading through canyons, along crystal-clear streams, and past dramatic cliff dwellings left by the Mogollon people centuries ago. Whether you're a seasoned hiker or prefer leisurely walks through stunning scenery, the terrain accommodates all skill levels. Birdwatchers find exceptional opportunities here, with numerous species attracted to the riparian zones and desert habitat.

The small size of Gila Hot Springs Campground creates an inherent advantage for those seeking a quieter camping experience. You won't find the hustle and bustle of mega-campgrounds here. Instead, expect a genuine community atmosphere among fellow nature enthusiasts who value solitude and authentic desert living. The nearby town of Silver City offers supplies, dining, and cultural attractions including galleries and museums showcasing regional history and art.

This destination appeals particularly to outdoor purists, hot spring enthusiasts, hikers, and anyone seeking to disconnect from daily routines and reconnect with the natural world. The combination of thermal springs, wilderness access, and peaceful surroundings makes Gila Hot Springs Campground a hidden gem in New Mexico's outdoor recreation landscape.

Awesome location! About 30 something miles from the highway, down a very windy country road. Make sure you plan out your route ahead of time, I didn't get a single bar of service the whole time I was out there. Seeing the stars from one of the immaculately clean hotsprings was a truly magical experience. I've never been to a campsite so quiet. It's right next to a beautiful little creek, and there's plenty of wildlife everywhere (outside the gates.) They also had pretty decently sized firewood bundles for sale. And above all in my book they were dog friendly!! Auggie is an awesome host, and we can't wait to return.

Wonderful campground... quiet, well cared for, spacious sites right next to the river, and $24 per night for a spot for two people. The pools are great, not too hot and very clean. Super nice host, highly recommend this campground!

I used the campground mostly and went in the pools after dark, which is clothing optional when the sun goes down. Everyone, including the owners and all my neighbors, were respectful and quiet. When I didn’t have enough cash on me, Carla allowed me to pay by PayPal which I appreciated since the campground is far from services. I read some of the other reviews complaining about no showers, no handwashing stations and only a porta potty. Y’all, this place is primitive. Change your perspective and you might have a better time out here. Between two of the pools is a potable hot water spout, cold water spout, and a small “handwashing” sink, wash your hands there. If you’re the type of person who needs a clean shower while you’re camping, this isn’t the place for you. Many people complained about the small rocks in the bottom of the pools, get yourself some swim shoes… I will 100% be back here.

This place is just gorgeous. Primarily, the three hot pools. What a treat to walk over from the van in your robe at night, and soak under a blanket of stars! The campsite is basic to say the least but, you know what, if it were any more developed we'd have been priced out of the hot spring experience. $8pp for 2 hours or $12pp to park overnight in the van? A no brainer for us. We must have soaked... This place is just gorgeous. Primarily, the three hot pools.
