About Guadalupe Peak Wilderness Campground

A Wilderness Use Permit is required for all use of these campsites. This primitive campground is located on the Guadalupe Peak Trail, 3.1 miles from the Pine Springs Trailhead, and 1 mile below the Peak. The elevation gain from the trailhead to the campsites is 2,200 feet. The campground is on a small knoll and only minimally protected from high winds. Five designated campsites are defined by tent pads. These sites are exposed and high winds are common.

Nestled in the remote and rugged landscape of New Mexico, Guadalupe Peak Wilderness Campground offers an authentic backcountry camping experience for those seeking genuine solitude and connection with nature. This intimate public campground, with just five sites, provides the perfect setting for travelers who value privacy and want to escape the crowds often found at larger commercial parks.

The campground sits in an area rich with natural beauty and geological significance. The surrounding region features dramatic mountain vistas, high desert terrain, and pristine wilderness that stretches for miles in every direction. The landscape here tells the story of millions of years of geological history, with distinctive rock formations and elevation changes that create a visually stunning environment. This is the kind of place where you can truly unplug from the modern world and experience the quiet majesty of New Mexico's interior.

For outdoor enthusiasts, the location offers exceptional opportunities for exploration and adventure. Hiking trails wind through the surrounding wilderness, offering varying difficulty levels for different skill and fitness levels. The area is ideal for those interested in geology, as the rock formations provide fascinating examples of ancient geological processes. Wildlife viewing is also a highlight, with opportunities to observe native New Mexico fauna in their natural habitat. The night sky here is absolutely spectacular, far from light pollution, making it an excellent destination for stargazing and appreciating the Milky Way in all its glory.

The small size of this campground is actually one of its greatest assets. With only five sites, you'll enjoy a peaceful, intimate camping experience where you're more likely to encounter mule deer and hawks than crowds of fellow campers. This setting appeals to RV travelers who are seeking a retreat for reflection, adventure, or simply a chance to enjoy the therapeutic benefits of time spent in nature.

This campground is perfect for travelers who embrace the spirit of adventure and don't require extensive amenities. If you're someone who travels to experience natural landscapes, enjoy hiking and outdoor exploration, appreciate quiet and solitude, or simply want to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, Guadalupe Peak Wilderness Campground delivers an unforgettable New Mexico camping experience.

Clean and well maintained, obviously in a great location on top of the mountains and secluded, away from the trail. There was a lot of rock around an inch underground at this campsite in the photos, which made pinning into the ground very difficult. There are several hooks along the perimeter of the campsite, which are very handy to secure cord to, which is super useful in windy conditions.

Overall a nice campground. Wish there were more camp sites as it gets crowded quickly. Outhouse at tents site, with hand sanitizer and lots of TP. Everything was well maintained. Running water restrooms, water spout, and dish washing sink at RV site just up the road 100yds. Access to a lot of trails, including the Guadeloupe Peak trail, is right there at the campground. We will definitely be back to hike more someday.

Tent pads are decent. Views awesome. Wind can be an issue. Good base from which to summit.
