About Iron Gate Campground

Campground in New Mexico.

Nestled in the heart of New Mexico, Iron Gate Campground offers RV travelers a wonderful base for exploring one of America's most distinctive landscapes. This public campground provides a genuine high desert experience where visitors can disconnect from the hustle and bustle and reconnect with nature, family, and friends.

The surrounding area is rich with natural beauty and cultural heritage. New Mexico's dramatic landscape features towering mesas, deep canyons, and expansive vistas that shift colors throughout the day. The region is home to fascinating geological formations and a rich tapestry of history spanning Native American, Spanish colonial, and Old West eras. Many visitors find themselves captivated by the clear night skies, which are remarkably free from light pollution, making stargazing from your RV an unforgettable experience.

For outdoor enthusiasts, the area provides excellent opportunities for hiking, photography, and exploration. The high desert environment creates a unique ecosystem with distinctive flora and fauna adapted to arid conditions. Spring and fall months bring particularly pleasant weather for outdoor activities, though the region's generally dry climate makes it accessible year-round for well-prepared travelers.

Small towns and villages in the region showcase authentic New Mexico character, from adobe structures to vibrant local markets and galleries. Food lovers will appreciate the region's famous red and green chile, available at local restaurants and farmers markets throughout the area.

Iron Gate Campground serves as an ideal jumping-off point for travelers interested in geology, history, Native American culture, and outdoor recreation. Whether you're seeking a peaceful desert retreat, a base camp for exploration, or simply a place to slow down and enjoy wide-open spaces, this campground positions you perfectly to experience what makes New Mexico special. There are Ruts, large puddles, dips, rocks, and you name it. You absolutely should not consider this campsite unless you have some experience off roading and a vehicle that can handle it (4WD and high clearance). We were allured by the reviews of peaceful campsite, minimum people, and good views but to an average family like us traveling on this road was regrettable. The 4 miles took over 40mins. Campsite was more of a jump off point for hunting or horseback riding. There were about 12 horse trailers there but only one other family camping when we arrived. You’ll have to hike for the views mentioned in the other reviews. We did wish we just went to the Jemez area or a closer site off the pavement after we made it home.

My all time favorite campground in NM. Gorgeous views and peaceful because RVs can’t make it up the crazy approach road. Hamilton Mesa hike is spectacular.

At the dead end of an interesting road, great hikes, quiet, off-grid, away from the otherwise busy Pecos area...
