About Joe Skeen Malpais Campground

Campground in New Mexico.

Joe Skeen Malpais Campground offers a remarkable gateway into one of New Mexico's most distinctive and otherworldly landscapes. Located near the town of Grants, this public campground sits adjacent to the El Malpais National Monument, a sprawling volcanic wilderness that showcases the raw power of nature in stunning fashion. The name "malpais" means "badlands" in Spanish, and visitors quickly understand why when they witness the jagged lava flows, dramatic cinder cones, and vast fields of dark volcanic rock that characterize this unique terrain.

The campground itself provides a comfortable base for exploring this geological wonderland. Its proximity to the monument means you can spend your days hiking through lava tubes, climbing ancient cinder cones, and walking across landscapes that feel almost alien in their beauty. The contrast between the barren volcanic fields and the scattered piñon and juniper forests creates a striking visual experience that changes throughout the day as sunlight plays across the black rock formations.

This area appeals to a wide range of outdoor enthusiasts. Hikers find incredible trail options ranging from short walks to more challenging backcountry adventures. Geology buffs are captivated by the visible evidence of volcanic activity that shaped the region thousands of years ago. Photographers discover endless opportunities to capture dramatic landscapes, especially during golden hour when the light transforms the volcanic terrain into something truly magical. Stargazers benefit from the relatively remote location, which means darker skies for viewing the night sky.

The surrounding region offers more than just geological wonders. Grants has a rich history tied to uranium mining and Route 66 heritage. The nearby Laguna Pueblo adds cultural depth to the area, and adventurous travelers can explore the unique character of this part of New Mexico. The elevation provides comfortable temperatures, particularly appealing during warmer months when lower desert areas become scorching.

Whether you're seeking solitude in a dramatic landscape, planning an adventure-packed vacation, or simply wanting to experience one of nature's most impressive geological displays, Joe Skeen Malpais Campground provides an excellent jumping-off point for an unforgettable New Mexico experience.

Great boondocking/dispersed camping area. Fairly easy to get to and a bit challenging to level things out. 7 nights maximum stay. No charge.

I often drive between Colorado and Arizona. New Mexico is my heart place so it is a pleasure to break the trip up into two parts with a stop over at Joe Skeen. Free BLM camping with picnic tables, CLEAN vault toilets. There is no water, but it does have trash! Lovely hikes near El Malpais! I love our Public Lands and I love those who work here. Thank you!

Some trails into the bluff nearby that are hikeable. But some loose rocks.

Awesome find while on the road. Beautiful spot to camp for a night or 2. Free campground with shaded picnic tables, very clean, theres a pit toilet nearby and lots of great exploring to do in the conservation area, walked right from the campsite into a great hike. Only complaint is the tiny bastard flies and occasional biting flies.

Not for low clearance vehicles like motorhomes that have a longer tail end past the rear axle. You have to drive thru a small yet deep wash that is very steep in and out , but only maybe 40 or 50 feet across that dips 7 feet down and the road is partially sand.
