About Juniper Family Campground

Three (3) loops, 52 site campground near the entrance to the monument. Two (2) sites for small groups up to 20 people. Abert's Squirrel Loop is first come, first serve only. Black Bear and Coyote Loops are available through reservation only. They can be reserved online at Recreation.gov.

Nestled in the high desert landscape of northern New Mexico, Juniper Family Campground offers a peaceful retreat for RV travelers seeking authentic southwestern scenery and genuine outdoor hospitality. Located near the small community of Chireno, this public campground serves as an ideal base for exploring one of America's most distinctive regions, where vast open skies meet piñon and juniper forests typical of the area's natural character.

The campground's location puts you at a comfortable elevation where the desert air feels crisp and refreshing, particularly appealing during the warmer months when lower elevations become uncomfortably hot. The surrounding landscape offers that classic New Mexico aesthetic that draws visitors from across the country, with dramatic vistas and the kind of quiet that seems increasingly rare in our modern world. Early mornings bring the soft light of sunrise over the high desert, while evenings reward you with some of the most spectacular stargazing New Mexico has to offer.

Chireno itself represents the slower pace of rural New Mexico, where local culture and history run deep. The area is rich with cultural significance, and visitors will find themselves surrounded by the traditions and heritage that define this part of the state. For those interested in history and geology, the surrounding region offers numerous opportunities for exploration and learning about New Mexico's fascinating past and natural formation.

The campground's 52 sites provide a manageable scale that keeps things intimate while accommodating a good variety of travelers. Whether you're an experienced RV enthusiast or relatively new to campground travel, the family-oriented atmosphere encourages a sense of community among guests who gather around shared appreciation for the outdoors.

The high desert location makes this an excellent jumping-off point for exploring the wider region. Those interested in scenic drives, hiking, photography, or simply experiencing authentic New Mexico will find Juniper Family Campground a welcoming home base. Families appreciate the accessible setting, while solo travelers and couples often return season after season for the peaceful solitude and genuine southwestern charm that defines this corner of New Mexico.

Lovely campground. Three sections, one of them being first come first serve. Nice and clean toilets with toilet paper and soap. There’s even a sink with hot water. Also plenty of drinking water. Great experience!

It’s a nice campground with plenty of sites that are reservable or first come first serve. Hiking trails start out of the campground and one leads down to the Bandelier visitor’s center. I had a hard time getting set up with a 38 foot camper and had to park my truck elsewhere. I still gave it 5 stars because of the location

Nice place to camp. Neighbors were on top of me because they put their RV off their site onto the dirt even though the "rules" say it's not allowed. Claims to be a dark sky park but bathroom lights are blazing all night. Camp host is nice but not sure what she does other than socialize. Doesn't enforce the rules or clean the bathrooms. Nice reservable campground with lots of sires and a great base for exploring Bandelier. Large and well planned sites, but make sure you try to find a spot with some shade if camping in the warmer months!

We stayed here for 3 nights in mid-May 2024, using it as a base for exploring Bandelier National Monument and the surrounding area. Our site was near one the restroom with running (cold) water. There is a sink conveniently located outside the restroom for dish washing. The restroom is well-stocked and clean. We had originally reserved site #20 but could not use it as it the driveway was too much of a slope for our camper-van, so we moved to site #12 in the non-reservable section. With daytime temperatures in the mid-70°s and low-50°s in the morning, it was a pleasant time of the year to stay here. We hiked the easy, 1-1/2 mile Frijoles Canyon overlook trail loop from the campground, providing a scenic view this area of the park. Highly recommended!
