About Mount Taylor RD

Each season on the Mt. Taylor Ranger District provides different opportunities for the forest visitor.  In late spring, summer and early fall, hikers and backpackers can enjoy the beautiful vistas along Gooseberry Spring Trail as they approach the summit of Mt. Taylor or Strawberry Canyon Trail on the way to McGaffey Lookout Tower in the Zuni Mountains. Fall offers warm, clear days and crisp, cool nights and brings with it abundant hunting opportunities in the Zuni Mountains and on Mt. Taylor. ...

Mount Taylor RD offers a wonderful escape into New Mexico's high country, providing RV campers with access to one of the state's most distinctive natural landmarks. Located in the shadow of Mount Taylor, an 11,305-foot volcanic peak, this public campground serves as an ideal base for exploring the rugged beauty of northwestern New Mexico. The surrounding landscape showcases dramatic volcanic geology, with cinder cones, lava flows, and sweeping vistas that change character throughout the day as light plays across the terrain.

The campground's elevation and mountain setting create a refreshing climate, particularly welcome during New Mexico's hot summers. Visitors appreciate the cooler temperatures and the chance to escape lower elevations while still enjoying the authentic high desert experience. The area attracts hikers, nature enthusiasts, and outdoor photographers who want to experience New Mexico's geological wonders without traveling to heavily crowded destinations.

Mount Taylor itself holds significant cultural importance and provides excellent opportunities for those interested in hiking and outdoor recreation. The surrounding lands offer access to various trails suitable for different skill levels, from leisurely walks exploring the volcanic landscape to more challenging summit attempts. Birdwatchers find the area rewarding, with species typical of high desert and mountain ecosystems visible throughout the seasons.

The location positions campers well for exploring the broader region. Grants, the nearest town, offers essential services and supplies for RV travelers. From Mount Taylor RD, visitors can easily venture to other notable New Mexico attractions, making it a practical hub for a multi-destination camping trip. The campground appeals to those seeking authentic southwestern experiences, geological interest, and outdoor adventure away from tourist-heavy areas.

Whether you're a serious hiker, casual nature lover, or simply seeking peaceful mountain scenery and starry skies, Mount Taylor RD provides a genuine New Mexico camping experience that resonates with travelers looking for substance and natural beauty.

I’ve seen complaints about mosquitos in other reviews. They must be new to grassy areas. Was not a problem for me. See you soon!

Just off the highway, conveniently located near Love's and a recreational dispensary. It's not real close to the highway but you still get Highway noise and a distant train track is pretty busy.
