About Tajique Campground

Campground in New Mexico.

Tajique Campground offers a wonderful escape into the natural beauty of central New Mexico, nestled in a region known for its striking landscapes and outdoor recreation opportunities. Located in the foothills of the Manzano Mountains, this public campground provides RV travelers with an authentic New Mexico camping experience that balances accessibility with genuine wilderness atmosphere.

The setting is one of the primary draws for visitors to Tajique. The area sits at an elevation that brings cooler temperatures during warmer months, making it an ideal destination for those seeking relief from summer heat while still enjoying the distinctive New Mexico climate and scenery. The surrounding Manzanita Mountain range offers dramatic vistas and a sense of being truly removed from everyday hustle, yet the campground's location keeps you reasonably close to services and attractions.

Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to appreciate in the region. Hiking opportunities abound in the surrounding areas, with trails ranging from easy strolls to more challenging excursions. The landscape is characteristic of New Mexico's high desert terrain, featuring juniper and piñon pine forests that provide natural shade and that distinctive southwestern fragrance. Wildlife viewing is often rewarding, and stargazing at night is spectacular thanks to the elevation and distance from major light pollution.

The broader area around Tajique provides cultural and historical context that enriches any stay. New Mexico's rich heritage, blending Native American, Spanish colonial, and Anglo influences, is evident throughout the region. Nearby communities offer glimpses into traditional New Mexico life and architecture.

This campground is particularly well-suited for travelers who want to experience authentic New Mexico without seeking resort-style amenities. It appeals to those who value natural surroundings, outdoor recreation, and the peaceful atmosphere that comes with a mountain setting. Whether you're planning a longer stay to explore the region or a brief stopover on a larger southwestern journey, Tajique Campground serves as a solid base for experiencing what makes central New Mexico special.

Enjoyed staying here in mid-Oct. Quiet, easy to access, pretty spot near a cliffside. There are two picnic tables with firepits, a couple of large turnouts down the road. Trash recepticles and pit toilets were in good shape. Thank you for leaving it clean!

Beautiful place, not a ton of people around and the bathroom was well maintained. There is a bear proof toilet and plenty of nature.

Cross the small creek down from the wooden sign of Smokey the Bear and you will find the perfect campsite. At night you can hear the small waterfall just upstream.

Nice site. Not very many good places for pitching a tent, except for a really nice area on the other side of the stream that has a picnic table. We made due at the site near the road. Also, the bathroom was fairly clean. Pretty spot, and the stream has a very nice small waterfall. Very relaxing, and uncommon in central New Mexico. Overall an enjoyable place.
