About Wild Rivers Recreation Area

The Wild Rivers Recreation Area is located within the Rio Grande Del Norte National Monument and along the Rio Grande Wild and Scenic River and Red River Wild and Scenic River. Here visitors may experience the beauty of an 800-foot deep canyon sliced into volcanic flows by the Rio Grande (Spanish for Large River) and Red River where they come together.Located in the high plains of northern New Mexico, this area is rich with history, rugged beauty, and enticing recreational opportunities. Nestled in the heart of New Mexico's spectacular landscape, Wild Rivers Recreation Area offers RV campers an unforgettable escape into nature's grandeur. This public campground serves as the perfect basecamp for exploring one of the Southwest's most dramatic geological wonders, where the Rio Grande and Red River converge to create stunning canyon views that have captivated visitors for generations.

The setting itself is remarkable. Towering canyon walls frame your campsite, creating natural amphitheaters of stone that shift through brilliant shades of red, orange, and purple as the sun moves across the sky. The air here feels different—crisp and clean, carrying the whisper of flowing water far below. For RV travelers, this means you're camping in an environment that feels genuinely remote and pristine, yet with organized facilities that make extended stays comfortable and convenient.

The recreation area's primary appeal lies in its incredible outdoor opportunities. Hiking trails crisscross the landscape at varying difficulty levels, from gentle riverside walks to more challenging ridge hikes that reward you with panoramic vistas stretching for miles. Fishing enthusiasts will appreciate the river access, where anglers pursue trout and other species in the pristine waters. Photography lovers find endless inspiration in the dramatic geological formations and changing light throughout the day.

Beyond the campground itself, the broader region offers compelling day-trip possibilities. The area's rich cultural heritage includes nearby pueblos and historical sites that provide insight into New Mexico's indigenous populations and Spanish colonial past. Small towns within reasonable driving distance offer supplies, dining, and local character. The night sky here is particularly impressive—far from major light pollution, stargazers can experience the Milky Way in all its glory.

This destination appeals to a wide range of travelers. Outdoor enthusiasts and adventure seekers find abundant activities, while those seeking solitude and contemplation discover peaceful spots for reflection. Families enjoy manageable hikes and natural swimming areas, while retirees appreciate the slower pace and manageable distances. Whether you're an experienced RV traveler seeking a less-crowded destination or a first-time camper wanting to experience authentic New Mexico wilderness, Wild Rivers Recreation Area delivers an authentic Southwestern experience.

However the views at the La Junta campground and trail head were wonderful. There is a bike lane that follows the 1 way loop drive from the visitor center to La Junta campground and look out. We saw Lots of bikers riding this loop and one told us he’s been coming for years. Very sunny and hot the day we visited in mid September. Recommend hat, water, sunscreen. The La Junta trail has been closed for 3 years or so. Overall kind of disappointing, thus the 2 star review.

Beautiful location. Limited services ("no water available") first time visiting so no idea why or what is going on with water. We were in the area for a youth hunt and spent more time here in the general area than we intended.

The pleasant and knowledgeable staff made this an easy Win. We enjoyed it so much that we decided to return for on a second trip a few days later.

Camped here for a night, hiked down to the river and watched an amazing sunset over the canyon. The lady who helped us in the visitor center was super helpful in our decision which camp site to pick.

We found only a few sites that could easily handle our size. (No tow vehicle). Site 27 in El Auguaje was long enough for even a tow vehicle. Trees are an obstacle backing in. Park time was 10 minutes max. A little maneuvering. Its worth the drive and the maneuvering for the campground & the views. The campgrounds are connected by a nice, one way paved road loop with a bicycle path. My wife loves to e-bike so this is perfect. Each site has a gazebo with a metal roof & picnic table. No electricity. No dump. Water is available at the toilets. This is boondocking at its best. AT&T was 20mbs. Great! We camped at El Aguaje Campground in a 38’ Super C.
