About Albuquerque KOA Journey

Campground in New Mexico.

Nestled in the heart of New Mexico's vibrant high desert landscape, Albuquerque KOA Journey offers the perfect basecamp for exploring one of America's most culturally rich and visually stunning regions. Located at 12400 Skyline Road Northeast, this KOA campground sits at an elevation that provides crisp mountain air and some of the clearest night skies you'll experience anywhere in the country. The location puts you within easy reach of Albuquerque's downtown attractions while maintaining that peaceful retreat feeling that makes RV camping so rewarding.

Albuquerque itself is a destination worth exploring beyond your campsite. The city is famous for the annual Balloon Fiesta, a spectacular event where hundreds of hot air balloons fill the sky in a riot of color against the desert backdrop. But there's so much more to discover year-round. The Old Town district features centuries of history, charming shops, galleries, and authentic New Mexican cuisine that will introduce your taste buds to genuine local flavors. The Sandia Mountains provide a dramatic eastern backdrop and offer numerous hiking opportunities for those who want to stretch their legs and experience the high desert ecosystem up close.

The region's cultural heritage runs deep. Native American pueblos surround the area, offering opportunities to learn about indigenous traditions and crafts. Museums throughout Albuquerque showcase Southwestern art, history, and culture that appeals to curious travelers of all ages. The Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument, located about an hour's drive north, presents otherworldly cone-shaped rock formations that invite exploration and photography.

This location works wonderfully for travelers seeking a mix of relaxation and adventure. Whether you're interested in outdoor recreation like hiking and mountain biking, cultural immersion in galleries and historic sites, or simply enjoying some of the best weather and stargazing the Southwest has to offer, Albuquerque provides endless possibilities. The high desert climate means generally mild winters and warm but not oppressively hot summers, making this an appealing destination across multiple seasons for RV travelers looking to experience authentic New Mexico hospitality and landscape.

We were brought to the KOA last night about midnight because we had an emergency on the highway and our tow truck driver pulled our fifth wheel to this campsite so that we could at least be comfortable for the night. We really appreciate Sandy and getting us a spot because it was at a highlight of the season for the hot air balloon festival and everything was full, but she was able to get us a spot with water and electricity, which is all we really needed just to rest. Park is very nice. It’s very quiet and a lot of amenities that we didn’t get to enjoy because we were just stopping over. I highly recommend this place and we will be back.

Great Stay at Albuquerque KOA We had a great stay at the Albuquerque KOA! The campground was clean, well maintained, and easy to access from the main road. Stayed for two days and liked the level site and quiet accomodations. Right on the Interstate but the state-erected sound wall is totally effective. No sounds...Very nice bathroom setup with 'family' style restrooms. Behind each door is a sink, a separate shower, and a toilet in a stall. Very private and very nice!

This is probably one of the ugliest KOA campgrounds I have ever stayed at — and I travel a lot and visit KOA locations very often across many states. This is probably one of the ugliest KOA campgrounds I have ever stayed at — and I travel a lot and visit KOA locations very often across many states. The cabin itself is standard, exactly the same type you find at KOA campgrounds all over the U.S. However, the price is clearly overpriced for this level of accommodation. The biggest and most unacceptable issue was the lack of bedding. I understand that it may not be included in the price, but when you pay around $100 for a small cabin without a shower or toilet, KOA campgrounds almost always provide bed linens, blankets, and at least pillows. I honestly don’t think it’s a good idea to call this a place to “relax” when you can’t sleep all night, constantly tossing and turning on a cold rubber mattress. Every time you wake up and move even slightly, you immediately feel the freezing, unpleasant, icy surface of the mattress. It completely ruins any chance of rest. Is it really that difficult to provide basic bedding? Do people who travel from state to state seriously carry their own sheets and blankets with them? That seems very strange. What makes this even more unreasonable is that the price of this cabin is only $20–30 cheaper than a standard hotel room. In a hotel, you get proper bedding, towels, shampoo, conditioner, housekeeping, and overall comfort — for just a few dollars more. Charging this amount of money for such uncomfortable conditions simply does not make sense. Because of the lack of bedding, we had to improvise a blanket from a pillow and anything we could find, and sleeping without sheets was extremely uncomfortable. The night was absolutely awful. Another serious issue was that there was no toilet paper in the restroom, which is completely unacceptable. The location is also very noisy due to a large highway located right next to the campground. If you are expecting peace and quiet at night, you will not find it here. Overall, this is a very average and unattractive KOA, and the price is completely unjustified for the level of comfort provided. Pros: • Wi-Fi worked well • The night check-in desk worked properly • The cabin was easy to find using the provided instructions • The cabin was clean • The restrooms were clean •VERY FRIENDLY STUFF!

For an urban campground, this one is nice. The grounds & facilities are in excellent condition, the staff is exceptional and the rates are on par with the industry standard. There's a security gate that closes in the evening which gives you peace of mind. Guests are given a code, so you can go out on the town or, if you are a late arrival.
