Capilla Peak is a beautiful spot to camp without a doubt, but there’s a few reasons why I’m only giving it 3 stars. Capilla Peak is a beautiful spot to camp without a doubt, but there’s a few reasons why I’m only giving it 3 stars. First is not the biggest deal for me personally, but as other reviews say, the last nine or so miles up to the peak is a bit of a treacherous drive. I absolutely recommend having all or four wheel drive. My little Subaru crosstrek took the road like a champ but we took it reaaaaal slow. Lastly, and the more impactful negative to my trip, is that it’s obvious the park cuts have reached New Mexico. I booked my trip on a Monday for that Saturday and Sunday night at a specific site spot because it has shade and a beautiful view. When I got there there was someone already in my spot because no one marked it off as reserved. They ended up moving after I showed them my reservation but not without alot of swearing and grumbling. As a solo female camper this was really uncomfortable and I felt my safety was at risk. The only reason I decided to stay was because there were several other families around who saw the whole interaction. A simple marker on the site number could have avoided this whole interaction. All that being said Capilla is a beautiful spot and I’m glad I made the trek up the mountain for this gorgeous site!

Great place. 8 spots at 9000 foot altitude. They all have picnic tables and fire pits. 3 still have awnings over the picnic tables. If you like quiet and solitude you are home here. No muddy roads to slide on in the rain. I had 2 wheel drive pick up. I wouldn’t take a big trailer up here. Maybe up to 20 footer but I would do bigger than that. A few potholes here and there and a few kinda tight turns. They have 2 bathrooms and a community picnic table area as well if you can’t get a camping spot. We met the lady who works at the observation tower at the peak just up the road. Real sweetheart. She said few people come up here and almost never seen it full even on the weekends. She said 14 years ago a big fire burnt a lot in this area including 5 of the 8 picnic awnings at the campsites. While we were here there was only 1 other campsite taken. A few other cars would drive through and look and take pics but then leave. It’s Saturday night here on our second night and only 3 spots taken as of 5pm. If I’m in area again I will come back.

If you don't have money or don't want to pay to camp, you can go 4 miles down the well maintained road and go to the New Canyon campsite which is free and is for a more primitive camping style.

Awesome campground, amazing views. Decent amount of camping spots, most of them have nice little half shelters, fire pits, benches, and bear safe storage bins. Can get a little windy because you're on the peak. Alot of hiking and great scenery to explore. Right next to the observatory as well. Great camping spot.

Cruised through here to look at the campsites. The grounds seemed well kept and very clean. Pretty spacious sites. I was definitely pleased with everything I saw.
