About Lavaland RV Park

Campground in New Mexico.

Nestled in the high desert landscape of Grants, New Mexico, Lavaland RV Park offers travelers a genuine southwestern camping experience at an elevation of over 6,400 feet. This location serves as an ideal base for exploring one of the most geologically fascinating regions in the American West, where ancient volcanic activity has shaped a landscape of remarkable contrasts and natural wonders.

Grants itself is a small but welcoming community with a rich mining heritage, positioned perfectly between Albuquerque and the Arizona border. The town provides essential services and local charm, with friendly residents and authentic New Mexico character. The surrounding high desert environment creates dramatic sunsets and cool, comfortable nights, especially welcome during the warmer months. The clear skies here offer excellent stargazing opportunities, a real treat for those seeking to escape light pollution.

The immediate area around Grants is packed with natural attractions that draw visitors from across the country. El Malpais National Monument, located just a short drive away, showcases an otherworldly landscape of dark lava flows, cinder cones, and natural bridges. This stunning badlands region offers hiking trails ranging from easy walks to more challenging adventures, with geological formations that tell the story of volcanic eruptions dating back thousands of years. The nearby El Malpais National Conservation Area provides additional exploration opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts.

For those interested in cultural heritage, the area boasts important archaeological sites and museums dedicated to Native American history. The region's significance to several Pueblo nations adds deeper meaning to a visit here. Rock formations and geological features provide endless photography opportunities for nature lovers and geology enthusiasts.

The high desert climate means generally pleasant weather for most of the year, though summers can be warm and winters can bring occasional snow. The elevation provides natural cooling during summer months compared to lower desert areas. Grants serves outdoor adventurers, families seeking natural wonders, geology buffs, and anyone looking to experience authentic New Mexico away from major tourist crowds. It's a destination that rewards curiosity and exploration.

They have three dogs and tie them up and they just continuously bark waking the whole park up. Many people have dogs, NO ONE does this but them. EVERY MORNING. They refuse to keep them quiet, they refuse to walk them, they literally just let their German shepherd outside and other two little dogs JUST TO BARK! It’s absolutely INSANE and a lot of us have talked and are thinking about LEAVING because nobody deserves to live like this. Why does one couple get to wake EVERYBODY up EVERYDAY with crazy barking? You’ll see people in their robes walking their dogs slightly after they’ve been harassed awake because you just can’t sleep anymore. Find somewhere where this is not allowed because it’s honestly sick

It's an RV , park stating my motorhome. I can't speak of rooms . Easy to locate right off I-40. 30 &50 amp hook ups . There's even a brewery where you can have a beer or glass of wine.

Nice campground, spaces are long drive through spots and very level. Right off I40, so easy stop for overnight stay. Friendly staff, and clean facilities. A little road noise from interstate, but to be expected due to location. There's a nice local brewery at the entrance with several well made options!

Adequate. Met our needs for a one night stay. Do not get a concrete pad site. They are new but have a several inch drop off on the sides. Only dirt on the sides with no grass and no gravel. With some improvement and maintenance could be a 4 star place.

This is a very nice RV park. We found the customer service very friendly and accommodating. There are tons of tall pine trees providing shade and ambience and the park is well-lit. Our pull-through RV pad was perfectly level, and all the hook-ups were well-located and in great condition. We found the customer service very friendly and accommodating. There are tons of tall pine trees providing shade and ambience and the park is well-lit. Our pull-through RV pad was perfectly level, and all the hook-ups were well-located and in great condition. We were provided with the code to the bathrooms and laundry room in our confirmation email, as well as the Wi-Fi password. The wi-fi connection was strong, as was the water pressure. We never had to even visit the office during check-in or check-out. Everything was easy and good. The only reasons I am giving a 4-star review instead of a 5-star review are these, relating to our specific site (site #28) for which we feel the park should address: 1) The huge Lava Land RV Park sign, which had apparently fallen or been blown off in a past storm, was lying on the ground about 15 feet from our trailer door. We enjoy sitting outside in the evening in lawn chairs, and this was a pretty big eyesore. 2) Our site was the first one on the right as you entered the park. We discovered that one of the roads for anyone to use to exit the park was the gravel road between our front door and the fallen sign. It is a pretty narrow road and a little difficult to distinguish (in the evening) between the gravel of our site and the gravel of the road. So, when a car came around the corner and drove right in front of us while we were sitting in our lawn chairs (and our dog was playing right in front of us), we were a little alarmed and slightly shaken by how close their car was to us (and how dangerous it could have been had they been going any faster). There are a couple of other things to consider when booking at Lava Land that are beyond the park's ability to control: 1) The park is located just off the freeway, and you do hear the freeway pretty loudly and clearly. Granted, we were on the row closest to the freeway. Not a concern if you have your AC and TV on, or like the white noise of the freeway. 2) Our site also happened to be located just underneath a brightly lit highway billboard. It got a little in the way of looking at the stars and the sunset. Again, this is out of the park's control, and if you book a site in the back row, this would not be an issue. We would stay here again, for sure. We will just choose a different site # next time.
