About Cataloochee Horse Camp

Campground in North Carolina.

Nestled in the heart of the Great Smoky Mountains, Cataloochee Horse Camp offers a unique camping experience tailored for equestrian enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. This public campground sits within one of the most scenic valleys in North Carolina, surrounded by the majestic peaks and rolling terrain that make the Smoky Mountains a destination for outdoor adventurers from across the country.

The valley itself is a step back in time, where historic homesteads and structures dot the landscape, telling the story of settlers who built their lives in this isolated mountain community generations ago. Visitors can explore the cultural heritage of Appalachia while enjoying some of the most pristine natural scenery the region has to offer. The area is particularly known for its healthy population of wild horses that roam freely through the valley, creating unforgettable wildlife viewing opportunities that you simply cannot experience elsewhere.

For those bringing horses, this campground provides the perfect base camp for extended trail riding adventures. The valley offers miles of scenic riding trails that wind through forests and meadows, with routes suitable for various skill levels. Whether you're an experienced equestrian or looking to enjoy horseback riding during your camping trip, the opportunities here are exceptional. The relatively flat valley terrain provides accessible trails while the surrounding mountain passes offer more challenging terrain for those seeking adventure.

Beyond the equestrian experiences, Cataloochee Horse Camp serves as an excellent launching point for exploring the broader Great Smoky Mountains National Park region. The campground's location provides convenient access to hiking trails, scenic drives, and visitor centers. The nearby town of Waynesville offers supplies, dining options, and local services for any camping needs you might have during your stay.

This destination appeals to families seeking a unique outdoor experience, horse enthusiasts planning extended riding trips, photographers looking to capture mountain wildlife and scenery, and anyone wanting to disconnect from daily life and immerse themselves in authentic Appalachian culture and mountain beauty. Tons of elk, even saw a mama bear & her cub. Worth the drive in a car anytime.
