Fantastic place to relax and decompress in nature for a weekend. Great views and the trails are fairly well maintained. Some of the most spectacular views on the Blue Ridge Parkway and climbing up Shining Rock was very fun.

We come here every year and have for the past 33+ years. This year we can’t visit due to Helene aftermath. This area is beautiful and there’s some great trails and lots of off trail camping. There’s a raw restroom at the Sams Knob Trailhead, can’t miss it. And every year there’s TONS of berry bushes trail side at Sam’s Knob. Blueberries, blackberries and even a few elderberries. There’s wild sassafras and many cool fresh wild man streams. We are hiking into the clearing for my daughter’s wedding, instead of picking another location she’s waiting for the work to finish.

If you are looking for the fall colors, there is no better spot!! Hiking up the art Loeb and seeing the vastness of the mountains and the color of the trees. It is like a museum painting but in real life. Definitely worth the time and effort.
