About North River Campground

Federal campground in North Carolina.

North River Campground offers a peaceful escape into the heart of North Carolina's natural beauty, nestled within the protection of the national forest system. This camping destination provides the perfect balance of accessibility and authentic wilderness experience, making it an ideal choice for families, couples, and solo adventurers seeking a genuine connection with nature.

The campground's location within the national forest means you're surrounded by towering trees, pristine waterways, and the kind of quiet that feels increasingly rare. The North River itself becomes your backyard, offering opportunities for fishing, wading, and simply listening to the gentle flow of water. Early mornings bring the sounds of birds and wildlife, while evenings settle into a peaceful rhythm punctuated only by campfire crackles and the rustle of leaves.

What makes this area particularly special is its position as a gateway to some of North Carolina's most scenic regions. The national forest surrounding the campground contains countless hiking trails ranging from gentle walks suitable for families with young children to more challenging routes for experienced hikers. These trails wind through diverse ecosystems, past waterfalls, and over ridges with expansive views. Spring brings wildflower displays that transform the forest floor into a colorful tapestry, while fall delivers the dramatic foliage that makes North Carolina a premier leaf-peeping destination.

The region's natural features extend beyond hiking. Fishing enthusiasts find excellent opportunities in the North River and surrounding streams, with native trout populations drawing anglers throughout the season. The forest itself serves as habitat for abundant wildlife, making bird watching and nature photography rewarding activities from your campsite.

This camping experience suits those who appreciate the fundamentals of outdoor recreation without requiring extensive amenities. It's perfect for travelers wanting to unplug from the demands of daily life, families teaching children about camping and self-sufficiency, and anyone seeking authentic natural beauty in one of the Southeast's most beautiful states.

Very nice, clean, non flush toilet available. Potable water available at near by check station. Spaces are well defined and not too close together. Beautiful wooded campground next to the river

Although I enjoyed the remoteness of the location, the vault toilet had such a smell that we couldn’t get away from. We weren’t right by it, but I am guessing too close. We will return to this campground, but will stay far from the bathrooms. Relaxing campground and nice space in between the sites.

Quiet camping spot. A favorite. North River runs right by the campsite... great for wading and playing. River itself isn't much more than a stream... about 15 feet across and maybe 18 inches at its deepest. My favorite campsite is the second on the left....Some people will fish here, but I have better luck up and downriver.
