Federal campground in North Carolina.

Nestled within the Cherokee National Forest in North Carolina, Rock Creek Recreation Area offers RV campers an authentic escape into one of the Southeast's most treasured natural landscapes. This forest setting provides the perfect balance of accessibility and wilderness adventure, making it an ideal destination for families, outdoor enthusiasts, and anyone seeking respite from the demands of everyday life.

The recreation area's primary appeal lies in its stunning natural surroundings. Towering trees create a canopy that filters sunlight into dappled patterns across your campsite, while the gentle sounds of Rock Creek flowing nearby provide a soothing soundtrack to your stay. The forest environment offers genuine connection to nature without requiring extensive backcountry hiking or specialized camping skills. Whether you're a seasoned RV traveler or relatively new to camping, the well-established facilities and clearly marked areas make this an accessible choice.

Rock Creek Recreation Area serves as an excellent base for exploring the broader Cherokee National Forest and the surrounding North Carolina mountains. The region is renowned for its incredible biodiversity, scenic hiking trails of varying difficulty levels, and opportunities for creek fishing. Birdwatchers will find the forest particularly rewarding, especially during spring and fall migration seasons. The clear mountain streams support native trout populations, making this area attractive for fishing enthusiasts.

The location provides proximity to charming mountain communities where you can resupply, enjoy local dining, and experience regional culture. The Appalachian heritage runs deep here, and visitors often find themselves drawn to local crafts, music venues, and family-owned restaurants that reflect generations of mountain tradition.

This campground appeals to those who prioritize natural beauty and outdoor recreation over elaborate amenities. RV campers here typically value hiking, fishing, wildlife observation, and simply spending time surrounded by forest beauty. The moderate elevation and temperate climate make it comfortable during much of the year, though fall foliage season attracts visitors from across the region. If you're seeking a campground where nature takes center stage and the forest setting is the primary attraction, Rock Creek Recreation Area delivers an authentic, memorable experience.

Great campground, they have 50 amp electric at the sites for $20 a night. There is water near each site. The dump station is clean but a little tight to get into and we were unlevel. Large spots but tight to get in if you have a larger unit. They have a “concrete” pond, which is very cool. There are some hikes right at the campground, we hiked to done beautiful waterfalls.

Gorgeous place to camp! The sites are level and feel very private and woodsy. The bathrooms for camping were sufficient. There is a pond for swimming/fishing and a great hike along the river. Each site has electricity and water is every couple of sites and by the bathroom so accessible but not right there. There is a dump station and somewhere to fill your camper up near the entrance. We tent camped here at site 3 in October and it was a very nice experience. The only con for us was wasn’t water at every campsite and there were shared spigots between several sites. But it was not that big of a deal. Sites 1 and 2 were the camp hosts and site 3 was very private, especially since we were in a tent. It backs up to the pond/pool and had its own little trail to the main bath... We tent camped here at site 3 in October and it was a very nice experience. It backs up to the pond/pool and had its own little trail to the main bathhouse as you enter the campground so it was like we had our own bathhouse. We lived the area as there was all kinds of things to do such as Blue Hole, Laurel Falls, Johnson City (Southern Craft BBQ) Appalachian Caverns and and the amazing town of Jonesborough (see my Google Maps reviews of these sites). Highly recommend!

Camped at double site 21. Very spacious and level gravel pad. Path through trees to bathroom. Nice paved roads in the rec area. Only drawback is that water is shared betwee 4-5 sites.

I drove through the park looking for a place for tent camping. It is well maintained with several bath houses. The campsites are clean. Some of the sites are secluded and shady with some more open giving campers a choice. There is a swimming area and the sites are easily accessible.
