About Cape Hatteras / Outer Banks KOA

Campground in North Carolina.

Cape Hatteras / Outer Banks KOA offers RV travelers an ideal base for experiencing one of the East Coast's most iconic and naturally beautiful destinations. Located in Rodanthe, North Carolina, this campground sits in the heart of the Outer Banks, a barrier island chain famous for its maritime heritage, wild horses, and some of the most dramatic coastal landscapes in America.

The Outer Banks region is steeped in American history and natural wonder. This is where the Wright Brothers achieved the first powered flight at nearby Kitty Hawk, a pivotal moment in aviation history that draws visitors from around the world. The area's rich maritime past includes the legendary Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, one of the most recognizable lighthouses in the nation, standing as a sentinel over the Diamond Shoals and the Atlantic Ocean. For history enthusiasts and casual visitors alike, exploring these landmarks provides endless opportunities for discovery and photography.

The natural environment here is exceptional. The Outer Banks are known for their pristine beaches, wild horse populations, and diverse ecosystems including salt marshes and maritime forests. Outdoor recreation abounds for RV campers, with options for swimming, fishing, windsurfing, and beachcombing. The area's consistent winds make it a premier destination for water sports enthusiasts. Birdwatchers find the region particularly rewarding, especially during migration seasons when numerous species pass through these Atlantic flyways.

Beyond the immediate coastal attractions, Rodanthe provides convenient access to Cape Hatteras National Seashore, a vast protected area preserving miles of undeveloped beaches and natural habitats. The village itself reflects the authentic charm of traditional Outer Banks communities, with local seafood restaurants and shops that showcase regional character.

This location appeals to families seeking beach vacations, history buffs interested in American heritage sites, nature lovers drawn to coastal ecology, and adventure seekers wanting water sports and outdoor activities. Whether you're planning a relaxing beach getaway or an action-packed exploration of this unique coastal region, Cape Hatteras / Outer Banks KOA provides convenient access to everything the Outer Banks have to offer.

What a wonderful campground! Probably the best bathrooms I’ve ever seen! The entire campground is very kept up! Very friendly and helpful staff!! Right on the beach and near everything! They even have setups for dogs! Great establishment and will stay again!! Great for families, couples, or just a group of friends to get away!

The hot tub was amazing for the chilly nights, I was glad they kept it open until 10:00pm. The community bathrooms were nice, a little dirty, but, again, we were only there for 2 days so they likely cleaned after we had already left. The staff was very friendly, gave us a quick rundown on everything, had free WiFi, a playground, a bounce pillow, and a short walk to the beach or to a nice diner across the street that served breakfast, lunch and dinner (we only had breakfast there, but it was really good!) It’s also in a great location in Rodanthe, so you could drive down to Avon or up to Nags Head without it being too far of a drive, about 20-30 minutes. Definitely recommend!

We had trouble deciding between the Cape Hatteras RV Park and the KOA, and wanted to share our experience from an early October stay. While the location is undeniably beautiful, we were disappointed overall. We understand it’s a harsh coastal climate, but many of the buildings, outdoor lamps, and fences had chipping paint and visible rust, giving the property a neglected feel. Our back-in site stayed muddy the entire time, especially right at the camper entrance. The Wi-Fi didn’t work at all in the section near the beach, even though that’s where many of the premium sites are. Additionally, while we appreciate that staff housing is necessary, the worker areas next to guest sites could be better maintained and kept tidier. The hot tub area was also frustrating — there’s a loud ringing noise that staff seemed aware of but haven’t addressed. The beach path felt unsafe, with a noticeable drop-off where it meets the sand. The pool was also not heated; when we called before booking, we weren’t given a clear answer about the temperature, which was disappointing. On a positive note, the glow train was one of the most fun activities we’ve seen at any KOA, and the rosé wine tasting to raise funds for breast cancer was a thoughtful and meaningful touch. This KOA has so much potential, but the lack of maintenance and attention to guest experience really stood out. While the location is great, the overall experience didn’t quite justify the premium price.

Trust me, I'm an easygoing camper, so if something bothers me, it would probably bother anyone else even more. First, I arrived a little early. I really appreciated that they agreed to let me in this early. However, once I was shown to my site, I pointed out to the employee that the neighbor was practically sitting in my shade shelter, it was obvious. The employee didn't seem happy with my dissatisfaction, he told me that it would be too complicated to ask the neighbor to place his trailer correctly, he would have to move me to another site. So he contacted the lady at the front desk and asked if I could move to another site. I was finally told that the only equivalent site available was 355, which was full of water from the rain, was half the size, and directly on the edge of the street where everyone passed. So I didn't really have a choice but to keep this site and endure the neighbor's encroachment on my environment. I've traveled a lot and experienced several campsites. Normally, in a resort of this price, this lack of courtesy towards the neighbor would not have been tolerated. If I had been lucky, they could have moved me to an equivalent site, but the next guest who would have faced this situation would not have been any happier. So I paid an extra price for a shade shelter that I will not have the pleasure of using, that's what disappoints me. I don't know if the KOA administration cares about the comments provided by their best customers, but I hope that it will be taken into account constructively to ensure a better customer experience.
