About Mattamuskeet Campground

Campground in North Carolina.

Nestled in the heart of eastern North Carolina's coastal plains, Mattamuskeet Campground offers a peaceful retreat for RV travelers seeking a genuine connection with nature. Located in Swan Quarter, this campground serves as an ideal base for exploring one of the region's most treasured natural landscapes and experiencing the authentic charm of North Carolina's Outer Banks area.

The surrounding region is dominated by the magnificent Lake Mattamuskeet, a vast shallow freshwater lake that creates a unique ecosystem unlike anywhere else on the East Coast. This natural wonder spans over 40,000 acres and has long been a destination for those who appreciate wildlife viewing, fishing, and outdoor recreation. The lake's historical significance as a former hunting and fishing destination adds to its appeal, and today it remains a haven for bird watchers and nature enthusiasts from around the country.

Swan Quarter itself maintains that unhurried, small-town character that many RV travelers seek when escaping the hustle of daily life. The village is deeply connected to its maritime heritage, and you'll find the community centered around traditional coastal living, fishing heritage, and natural resource stewardship. This is the kind of place where neighbors know each other, local restaurants serve fresh catches, and the pace of life invites you to slow down and breathe deeply.

For outdoor enthusiasts, the area offers exceptional opportunities for fishing on Lake Mattamuskeet, with opportunities to pursue largemouth bass and other freshwater species. The lake's shallow waters and expansive shoreline create a distinctive setting for water-based activities. Bird watching is particularly spectacular during migration seasons, when thousands of waterfowl pass through or settle temporarily, making it a premier destination for ornithologists and casual bird enthusiasts alike.

The location provides convenient access to the broader Outer Banks region, historic coastal towns, and natural preserves. Travelers can explore nearby communities, enjoy fresh seafood, and discover the rich history of North Carolina's coast. Whether you're seeking a quiet spot to settle for several days or using it as a launch point for coastal exploration, Mattamuskeet Campground positions you perfectly for an authentic Outer Banks experience without the crowds of more developed beach areas.

I stayed here back in February of 2020 for a job up that way. The staff was very pleasant, as well as helpful in helping me locate things in the area. It is a hunting area and we had the small rooms. They were very nice. Very clean. WiFi was spotty but it is in the whole area so I don’t see that as their fault. Good place, safe place for a quiet retreat or a weekend of duck hunting with your frien... I stayed here back in February of 2020 for a job up that way. If you are looking for a nice, quiet, cozy place to stay, then this is your place. It reminds me of a place that we stayed at in Ireland. Plus you get to see the beautiful Mattamuskeet Lodge and also enjoy the beautiful nature that Hyde County has to offer.
