About Sun Outdoors Cape Hatteras
Located near Rodanthe, North Carolina, Sun Outdoors Cape Hatteras features 400 campsites in a scenic setting. This RV resort is a favorite among visitors seeking outdoor adventure and relaxation.
The Outer Banks represent a unique stretch of North Carolina coastline where geography, history, and nature converge in remarkable ways. Rodanthe itself is a charming village with genuine local character, and the surrounding area offers endless opportunities for exploration and recreation. The Cape Hatteras National Seashore is practically on your doorstep, providing pristine beaches, excellent fishing opportunities, and some of the most beautiful natural scenery on the East Coast. This area is legendary among anglers, whether you prefer surf fishing, pier fishing, or offshore charter experiences that depart from nearby docks.
The resort itself caters to every type of RV traveler with full hookup sites and pull-through options that accommodate various rig sizes. The well-maintained facilities include hot showers, clean restrooms, laundry facilities, and a convenient camp store for those last-minute essentials. Picnic tables at each site provide the perfect spot for meals while enjoying the coastal breeze, and the dump station ensures easy tank management.
Beyond the immediate campground, the Outer Banks offer attractions that appeal to all ages and interests. History enthusiasts will appreciate the Wright Brothers National Memorial and the iconic Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, one of America's most recognizable landmarks. The lighthouse's distinctive black and white spiral stripes have guided mariners for generations, and visitors can learn about its remarkable relocation to protect it from coastal erosion. Wild horse tours let you encounter the famous feral horses that roam the Banks, a sight that feels like stepping back in time.
The fishing here is exceptional throughout the year, with different species in season depending on when you visit. Summer brings Spanish mackerel and bluefish, while fall and winter attract striped bass and other cold-water species. Even non-anglers appreciate the seafood restaurants serving ultra-fresh catches prepared in local traditions.
Nature lovers find paradise here with opportunities for kayaking in calm waters, birdwatching along migration routes, and beachcombing for shells and sea glass. The relatively undeveloped character of this section of the Outer Banks means you experience the barrier islands much as they've existed for centuries, with wide beaches and natural dunes rather than commercial overdevelopment.
This location works wonderfully for families wanting beach time without amusement park crowds, retired couples seeking peaceful coastal living, and adventure seekers ready to explore maritime heritage and outdoor recreation. The year-round operation means you can experience the quiet beauty of off-season visits or enjoy the vibrant summer season. With nearly 1500 reviews averaging 4.4 stars, travelers consistently praise the experience of staying here and exploring this special corner of North Carolina.

The pool was clean and not too overcrowded. The bathrooms located throughout the campground were also super clean. The beach was great as well. We could hear it from our campsite and had a nice breeze at all times. Campsite was big and hook ups were easy to access. Around the campground are great places to eat( like Neptunes) and entertain yourselves. All of the other people around us were friendly. The campground had daily activities throughout the week like bingo, ice cream social, tie dye, and even a corn hole tournament. You can stay on either the ocean side or sound side. The ocean side is more of a faster moving side, while the sound side faces the Pamlico bay where you can watch the most amazing sunsets ever. This is a great place if you have a tent, travel trailer, fifth wheel, or a motorhome. Or if you are staying for a few days or a few weeks.

Edit for the owner: The reason I left it at 4 stars was the fact that we were there in March or April and the cost was almost equal to what it would be to rent a 3 bedroom 2 bath house in the same area. We camp in many areas and these are some of the highest prices we see so we go other places in the off season. We enjoy the park but the cost is a concern.

Laundry facilities were clean. The clubhouse was clean & nice with a pool & a hot tub. The park itself is nothing special to look at. We will not come back to Camp Hatteras. The dealbreaker is how our friends were treated. We arrived 2 days before they did. We did not reserve a specific site number but we did pay for a site in the "premium" section, closest to the beach. When our friends arrived, they asked for a site in or near our section only to be told that they should have prepaid a $25 upcharge for a specified site if they wanted to be near us. We didn't know where the campground was going to put us - they don't give you a site number with your reservation. The employee could have EASILY accommodated our friends' request as there were MANY sites in our section available the entirety of our stay and they paid for a "premium" campsite just like we did. Our friends arrived 25 minutes ahead of 1pm check in, after driving 6 hours, they were turned away. Not even allowed to sit in the EMPTY parking lot for 25 minutes - that is just plain rude. There were SO many sites available. I understand "it is policy" but in all our travels, we have NEVER been turned away from a slightly early arrival. It would have been understandable if the campground was at capacity or busy with other arrivals but that was absolutely not the case. Disappointing. Policy should not outweigh treating your customers with kindness. I do not recommend Camp Hatteras. There are a lot of better choices for my money.

Never could get their WiFi or cable to work. Overall location was uneventful. The sites themselves were located close to beach and bay. However, all stores and restaurants in the vicinity were closed. We traveled 30+ minutes for restaurants and entertainment. Overall a very strange experience as we literally felt as if we were the only ones around.

What a wonderful campground! Probably the best bathrooms I’ve ever seen! The entire campground is very kept up! Very friendly and helpful staff!! Right on the beach and near everything! They even have setups for dogs! Great establishment and will stay again!! Great for families, couples, or just a group of friends to get away!

The community bathrooms were nice, a little dirty, but, again, we were only there for 2 days so they likely cleaned after we had already left. The staff was very friendly, gave us a quick rundown on everything, had free WiFi, a playground, a bounce pillow, and a short walk to the beach or to a nice diner across the street that served breakfast, lunch and dinner (we only had breakfast there, but it was really good!) It’s also in a great location in Rodanthe, so you could drive down to Avon or up to Nags Head without it being too far of a drive, about 20-30 minutes. Definitely recommend!

We had trouble deciding between the Cape Hatteras RV Park and the KOA, and wanted to share our experience from an early October stay. While the location is undeniably beautiful, we were disappointed overall. We understand it’s a harsh coastal climate, but many of the buildings, outdoor lamps, and fences had chipping paint and visible rust, giving the property a neglected feel. Our back-in site stayed muddy the entire time, especially right at the camper entrance. The Wi-Fi didn’t work at all in the section near the beach, even though that’s where many of the premium sites are. Additionally, while we appreciate that staff housing is necessary, the worker areas next to guest sites could be better maintained and kept tidier. The hot tub area was also frustrating — there’s a loud ringing noise that staff seemed aware of but haven’t addressed. The beach path felt unsafe, with a noticeable drop-off where it meets the sand. The pool was also not heated; when we called before booking, we weren’t given a clear answer about the temperature, which was disappointing. On a positive note, the glow train was one of the most fun activities we’ve seen at any KOA, and the rosé wine tasting to raise funds for breast cancer was a thoughtful and meaningful touch. This KOA has so much potential, but the lack of maintenance and attention to guest experience really stood out. While the location is great, the overall experience didn’t quite justify the premium price.

Trust me, I'm an easygoing camper, so if something bothers me, it would probably bother anyone else even more. First, I arrived a little early. I really appreciated that they agreed to let me in this early. However, once I was shown to my site, I pointed out to the employee that the neighbor was practically sitting in my shade shelter, it was obvious. The employee didn't seem happy with my dissatisfaction, he told me that it would be too complicated to ask the neighbor to place his trailer correctly, he would have to move me to another site. So he contacted the lady at the front desk and asked if I could move to another site. I was finally told that the only equivalent site available was 355, which was full of water from the rain, was half the size, and directly on the edge of the street where everyone passed. So I didn't really have a choice but to keep this site and endure the neighbor's encroachment on my environment. I've traveled a lot and experienced several campsites. Normally, in a resort of this price, this lack of courtesy towards the neighbor would not have been tolerated. If I had been lucky, they could have moved me to an equivalent site, but the next guest who would have faced this situation would not have been any happier. So I paid an extra price for a shade shelter that I will not have the pleasure of using, that's what disappoints me. I don't know if the KOA administration cares about the comments provided by their best customers, but I hope that it will be taken into account constructively to ensure a better customer experience.
