About Pettigrew State Park Campground

Campground in North Carolina.

Pettigrew State Park Campground offers a serene escape into one of North Carolina's most distinctive natural landscapes. Located in the coastal plain region near the small town of Creswell, this state park campground provides an ideal base for exploring a unique ecosystem where freshwater lakes meet maritime forests and pocosins, creating a environment unlike anywhere else in the state.

The park centers around Lake Phelps, a massive shallow lake spanning over 16,000 acres, which has been a significant feature of this region for thousands of years. The lake's unique characteristics and history make it a focal point for visitors seeking outdoor recreation and natural beauty. The surrounding landscape tells stories of North Carolina's diverse heritage, from Native American settlements to early colonial history.

One of the most compelling aspects of staying at Pettigrew is the opportunity to experience the Albemarle Region's natural wonders. The area is known for its exceptional fishing opportunities, with Lake Phelps offering excellent conditions for anglers throughout much of the year. Beyond fishing, the park provides access to hiking trails that wind through maritime forests and allow visitors to observe the region's distinctive plant and animal life. Bird watching enthusiasts will find tremendous value here, as the diverse habitats support numerous species throughout the year.

The campground setting itself provides a peaceful, nature-focused experience. Visitors appreciate the quieter, more laid-back atmosphere compared to many larger commercial RV parks. This makes it particularly appealing to those seeking genuine connection with nature rather than extensive developed amenities.

The location is excellent for travelers interested in North Carolina's coastal heritage without being right on the ocean. It's close enough to visit nearby historic sites and small towns that showcase the region's colonial past and natural history. The area attracts outdoor enthusiasts, families looking for a relaxed camping vacation, history buffs, and anyone seeking to explore one of North Carolina's lesser-known natural treasures. Spring and fall offer particularly pleasant weather for enjoying all the outdoor activities the park and surrounding region provide.

Small campground, only two other campers in February. The tundra swans were interesting and noisy. Nice little hikes in the area. Definitely a bear presence, as evidenced by the marks on a tree, so don't leave your food out.

This place has only 13 sites so it doesn’t feel so crowded like some other popular camping places. One side of the loop ( with bathroom) is much less private, you park and camp next to your neighbor. Nice campground. Very family friendly. Lake is great. Lots of hiking and wildlife to see. Only complaint was bathroom a old and dark. The word is that the entire camp ground is getting rebuilt next year to fix the issue.

We loved camping and hiking here! The old growth cypress, sycamore, and other huge trees are amazing. The 2.8 miles walk to mocassin overlook was worth it, but we discovered the trail is right by the road almost the whole way there. We didn't spend much time at the lake. It was windy the first day, and the water looked terrible. Other days it looked better, but it was too cool for us to try swimmi... We loved camping and hiking here! What a little hidden treasure of a NC State Campground! Only a dozen or so sites, but we were able to book a Saturday site online just a day in advance in late August. Site #2 is VERY shaded. There's Somerset House next door (a historical plantation site that's well worth touring) and a swimming area along the boardwalk near the campground. Oh, and there's a boat ramp/jetties - great for star gazing over lake Phelps. All for just $26 a night! Do pack your bug spray.
