The primary purpose of the dam was flood control for the Mahoning River valley, though it quickly became a major recreational area managed by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. The park's key features center on the nearly 7,850-acre lake, one of the largest in Ohio, which permits unlimited horsepower boating and is renowned for its excellent walleye and northern pike fishing. The park also includes a popular 600-foot swimming beach, extensive picnic areas, and over 14 miles of multi-use trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. For overnight stays, the park offers a large campground with full-service and electric sites. The nature view is characterized by the expansive body of water, its surrounding beech-maple woodlands, and large marshy wetlands. This diverse environment is a crucial habitat for wildlife, making it a birdwatcher's paradise, especially during the spring and fall migrations. Visitors frequently spot migrating waterfowl, great blue herons, and even bald eagles soaring over the water, offering a serene escape into Northeastern Ohio's natural beauty.

First time camping here. Love the park! Had what felt like my own backyard! What's the grandkids could have come along but they're back in school. They would have loved the area and the playground

Ended our camping season Two years in a row here. November camping in the wider, 30 amp area is amazing. Four of us were there. We each Had our own road. The flush toilets are nice! Lots of hunting and fishing were going on while we were there. Highly recommend!

This is a a beautiful state park! We spent a weekend camping here and boating on the lake and thoroughly enjoyed it! The campground is clean and is a very beautiful setting. The rain washed out the scheduled ranger programs, so we were surprised one morning by two park employees bringing an owl to our campsite to show the children

We had a great spot! Dogs loved it. We rented a pontoon for the weekend. People were great. Only downside or surprise .... I wasn't ready for an outhouse (latrine) to be my closest bathroom. Yuck! I just had to walk much further. A latrine is a deal breaker for me. I will book closer to a real bathroom next time. Ah, but our spot was so nice. Wish the outhouses could be changed.
