Here are my notes and impressions: 🗺️ Getting There There are no signs from Highway 26, so it’s easy to miss unless you know where to turn. Take USFS Road 12 south from Highway 26 for about 5 miles. The road is paved all the way to the campground. The campground is free and first come, first served. We had it completely to ourselves the first night, and only one other camper joined the second night—very tranquil. 🏕️ Camping Conditions This is primitive camping: no water available, so be sure to bring your own. There is a vault toilet, which was clean and functional. We originally hoped to stay at Walton Lake, but it was packed and reserved—Barnhouse was a great alternative while we explored the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. 🌿 Unique Features A highlight was an old horse trough carved from a log, still fed by a spring just above it. A charming and unexpected touch of history. 🥾 Trails & Terrain There are hiking trails nearby, but they’re not well-maintained. Expect fallen trees and debris, making them unsuitable for biking or horseback riding. Hopefully, trail cleanup is planned. 📵 Connectivity No cell service at the campground - at least for T-Mobile users. The nearest reception is in Mitchell, about 30 minutes away, with excellent signal—you can even spot the cell tower from town. ⛺ Final Thoughts Barnhouse Campground is ideal for those seeking solitude and a rustic experience. It’s a peaceful base for exploring the Fossil Beds and escaping the crowds. Just come prepared with water, supplies, and a sense of adventure.

Beautiful hidden campground in the woods. It's pretty small, we counted 8 sites only, that's why it's quite and peaceful out there. No fee required. No reservations, it's firs come - first served. There is no water or trash dumpster out there, so you need to clean after yourself and pick up trash with you. There is one vault toilet, not sure how often it's cleaned, can be pretty stinky. Gorgeous campground deep in the forest. Not a ton of sites, but you shouldn’t need many because of it being tucked away from the public. Picnic tables, fire rings, vault toilets, and a stunning hiking trail right next to one of the sites. I had 1-2 bars of Verizon LTE the whole time too, what more can you ask for.

Beautiful free forested campground with tables, firepits and vault toilet. Most sites are nicely spaced and the Barnhouse trail head starts in the campground. The bathroom could use a cleaning but it is Sunday so probably will get taken care of tomorrow. Please remember to take your garbage with you because there is no garbage service. Recent rains have left a few puddles though.

Quiet and beautiful campground! And it was free! We arrived close to sunset and the view was pretty! The road to the campground is a little bit far out. Please pack up your trash and bring your own water.
