In a relative short distance you go through pine trees, open grass fields, and small scrub and wildflowers; and then it is up a small scramble of one of the many peaks for breathtaking 360-degree views. The Billy Fields Campground is certainly worth mentioning as it was one of the cleanest and most comfortable campsites in the area. There is no fee to use this campground and there are approximately 6-8 campsites with room for your car and tent. They each have a fire pit and grill, along with a picnic table. Fields Creek runs along the backside of the campground just a few yards away from the camp sites. It is not much of a picturesque creek as there is a lot of wild brush and trees obscuring most of it, but the ice cold running water is definitely nice to clean up a bit and cool off from the 100 degree heat.

A wonderful spot. Too bad we were just traveling thru. This is a spot I'm likely to come back to. Only 2 campsite by the restroom but another one just down the next driveway. So nice and quiet. Pretty little creek along the campground edge so you heard running water all night. Wouldn't mind a week or better here.

Stopped for just one night on our way to John Day Fossil Beds last August. We pulled off at the end of the little loop because both sites were taken. Got up early and as we were packing up the tent yellow jackets and big black flies were FIERCE. There was cow poop everywhere. Maybe it was better over in the actual sites, maybe better if we hadn't gotten in so late.

It was a so so campground just off the paved road. Cow's offer some entertainment as does the creek's cool waters and the small fish. The views are spectacular of nearby mountains of ragged, rough, and rugged, really, they're pretty awesome. Beware of snake's and maybe mountain puddy's. :)

No utilities, but a clean camp ground with decent space for tents. Rangers stop by frequently and give help when needed.
