About Mickey Hot Springs

Overview:Mickey Hot Springs is a moderately known geothermal area on the northern end of the Alvord Desert. Sometimes there is a plethora of geothermal activity here and sometimes it is mostly dried up, empty holes - all dependent on the season and recent rainfall. Nearly always, there is a colorful 15-20' diameter, over 10' deep, pool - clear with near-boiling water. If the time is right, the ground hisses with steam, releasing pressure from the same geologic fault that created Steens Mountain.

Mickey Hot Springs offers a unique high-desert camping experience in southeastern Oregon, nestled in a landscape defined by wide open spaces and natural geothermal wonders. This public campground serves as an ideal base camp for travelers seeking something distinctly different from typical RV destinations, where the quiet of remote desert living meets easy access to genuine natural attractions.

The area surrounding Mickey Hot Springs showcases the rugged beauty of Oregon's remote interior. The campground itself sits in terrain characterized by sagebrush flats and distant mountain views, creating an authentic frontier camping atmosphere. The mineral-rich hot springs that give the location its name are the primary draw for many visitors, offering the chance to soak in naturally heated waters under expansive desert skies. For those interested in geothermal features and geological formations, this area represents one of Oregon's lesser-known but fascinating natural wonders.

This region of Oregon appeals to travelers who appreciate solitude and natural landscapes away from crowded destinations. The high desert environment provides remarkably clear night skies, making it exceptional for stargazing enthusiasts. The area is relatively undeveloped, which means you'll experience genuine remoteness while still being able to access essential services at nearby towns. The landscape changes dramatically with the seasons, offering different charms throughout the year, from the wildflower displays of spring to the crystal-clear visibility of fall.

Nearby, visitors will find access to the broader Malheur County region, which includes opportunities for outdoor recreation, wildlife viewing, and exploration of Oregon's unique geological features. The campground works well for self-sufficient RV travelers who enjoy hiking, photography, and nature observation. It's a destination for those seeking authentic desert camping where the main attractions are the natural surroundings and the peaceful isolation that comes with high-desert camping. Whether planning an extended stay or using Mickey Hot Springs as a stopover on a larger Oregon road trip, visitors will find a genuine connection to the landscape and a camping experience that prioritizes natural beauty over developed amenities.
