About Pothole Arch

Campground in Oregon.

Pothole Arch Public Campground offers RV travelers an authentic gateway to one of Oregon's most captivating natural regions. Nestled in a landscape shaped by ancient geological forces, this campground provides an ideal base for exploring the high desert terrain and remarkable rock formations that define this corner of the state. The area surrounding Pothole Arch showcases the raw beauty of Oregon's backcountry, where towering rock formations, expansive vistas, and striking geological features create an unforgettable backdrop for your camping adventure.

The campground itself caters to RV enthusiasts seeking a more remote and rugged experience. The setting gives you direct access to some of Oregon's most interesting natural attractions and hiking opportunities. The distinctive rock formations and arches found throughout the region tell the story of millions of years of geological history, and visitors can explore these natural wonders at their own pace. The high desert environment offers clear night skies perfect for stargazing, a feature that appeals to many RV travelers looking to escape light pollution and reconnect with the natural world.

This location draws a diverse crowd of outdoor enthusiasts, from geology buffs interested in the region's formation to hikers and photographers seeking dramatic landscapes. The area is particularly appealing to travelers who prefer a quieter camping experience away from developed resort-style facilities. Families with older children who enjoy moderate hiking and exploration find the region especially rewarding, as do adventure seekers looking to discover lesser-known natural attractions in Oregon.

The surrounding area provides numerous opportunities for day trips and exploration. The high desert landscape, while seemingly stark at first glance, reveals hidden pockets of beauty and geological intrigue to those willing to venture out. Sunrise and sunset from this elevation paint the rock formations in stunning colors, offering spectacular photography opportunities throughout the day. Whether you're interested in geology, photography, hiking, or simply soaking in remote natural beauty, Pothole Arch serves as an excellent staging point for discovering the unique character of Oregon's interior landscape.

Great if you have a RV or camper it's a gravel parking lot with access to a boat ramp and the river. If you want tent and group camping I would go to the left instead of straight. You would be going to burnt ranch campground there it opens up to the whole valley. Highly recommended

Car sites fill fast (we arrived on Thursday) but there is a ton of overflow walk in camping. For walk in camping, we opted to cook dinner at the fire ring in the day use area, which looked new and hardly used. Great access to the Painted Hills. Lots of bike campers and river rafting folks when we were there. Worth the absolutely stunning drive in. While the drive in IS gravel / dirt, it would... This beautiful area offers something for everyone, from dispersed camping to floating the river, fishing, and hiking. Here's my positive review of this amazing recreation area: The dispersed camping at Priest Hole Recreation Area is a fantastic way to get away from it all and immerse yourself in nature. Room for the wHOLE family - these spots are huge! There are also 2 group camp sites with parking for about 15 cars (one on the river bar and one on the hillside. If you don't like the "upgrade" then there are plenty of primitive sites on burnt ranch rd. along the river going west beyond the rec site (check the last photo). The river is also friendly but bring inflatables for where it gets rocky and shallow; and be wary of rattlesnakes when getting out (nest at the take out picnic area).
