About Black Canyon Campground (Willamette National Forest, OR)

Federal campground in Oregon.

Nestled in the heart of Oregon's Willamette National Forest, Black Canyon Campground offers RV enthusiasts an authentic Pacific Northwest camping experience surrounded by towering Douglas firs, western hemlocks, and the gentle sounds of nature. This well-maintained national forest campground provides a perfect balance of accessibility and wilderness immersion, making it an ideal destination for both seasoned RV travelers and families seeking a getaway from the everyday.

The campground's location along the McKenzie River corridor places you at the gateway to some of Oregon's most spectacular natural attractions. The river itself is a major draw, offering opportunities for fishing, rafting, and simply enjoying the soothing sounds of flowing water throughout your stay. The McKenzie River area is renowned among fly fishers for its excellent trout fishing, and the river's emerald-green waters create stunning photo opportunities at nearly every turn.

Black Canyon's setting in the Willamette National Forest means you're surrounded by thousands of acres of pristine forest ready for exploration. Hiking trails of varying difficulty levels branch out from the campground and nearby areas, ranging from easy riverside walks to more challenging mountain hikes that reward you with panoramic views. The forest canopy provides natural cooling during warmer months, making this an especially appealing summer destination when lower elevation areas become uncomfortably hot.

The nearby towns and attractions add cultural and recreational diversity to your camping trip. The historic town of Springfield is within reasonable driving distance, offering authentic dining, local shops, and services. For those interested in natural wonders, the volcanic landscapes that define central Oregon are accessible for day trips, along with numerous waterfalls and scenic viewpoints that showcase the region's geological drama.

This campground appeals to a wide range of travelers: couples seeking romantic riverside retreats, families wanting to introduce children to outdoor camping, retirees looking for peaceful natural settings, and adventure seekers using the location as a base for exploring the Cascades. The Willamette National Forest itself is a treasure trove of outdoor activities including mountain biking, wildlife viewing, and photography opportunities. Whether you're planning a week-long forest immersion or a weekend escape, Black Canyon Campground provides the perfect launchpad for experiencing the raw beauty of Oregon's interior.

I really enjoyed our camping trip last weekend. We didn't see any racoons but we did see the cutest little chipmunks! Our kids loved playing in the river. The train at night is really the only downside.

Nice campground along the Willamette River. Our site was number 42, hard to find but very large and no visible neighbors. No flush toilets and had to hike a ways to pit toilets from our site. Also a bit noisy with road traffic and trains.

Gorgeous gorgeous campground. Will definitely be staying here again. River access, and just nestled among the beautiful trees. Stayed in site 073.

Great place, close to towns, clean outhouses, amazing photo opps, giant trees & river swimming. Super nice camp hosts. The best thing about this campground is, that a bunch of the spaces are far apart & secluded. We loved the quiet peace at night & no critters got into our stuff. We put all our food, inside the cars at night, so I am certain that helped. Tons of walking trails & if you're a p... The water is clear & cool & there is a sandy beach to hang out on. There is also an amphitheater. I adore this campground & will return.
