About CULTUS CREEK CG (WA) GIFFORD PINCHOT NF

Federal campground in Oregon.

Nestled within the expansive Gifford Pinchot National Forest, Cultus Creek Campground offers RV travelers an authentic escape into the Pacific Northwest's pristine wilderness. This well-regarded national forest campground provides an excellent base for exploring one of the region's most magnificent natural areas, where towering evergreens, cascading waterways, and mountain vistas create an unforgettable outdoor experience.

The campground's location in the heart of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest means you're surrounded by thousands of acres of protected forestland. The forest itself is named after the pioneering conservationist Gifford Pinchot and represents one of the most biodiverse regions in the Pacific Northwest. The area is characterized by old-growth forests, pristine streams, and abundant wildlife, making it a paradise for nature enthusiasts and those seeking solitude away from crowded tourist destinations.

Cultus Creek itself is the focal point of the campground, offering gentle water sounds that create a peaceful camping atmosphere. The creek supports healthy populations of native fish, and the surrounding forest provides habitat for deer, elk, and numerous bird species. Early morning and evening wildlife watching is particularly rewarding, as visitors often encounter deer at the forest's edge and hear the calls of various woodland birds.

The national forest location provides exceptional hiking opportunities for all skill levels. Trails ranging from easy walks to challenging backcountry routes depart from the immediate area, allowing visitors to explore everything from lower elevation forest trails to higher alpine terrain with commanding views. Fishing enthusiasts will appreciate the creek access and nearby waterways that offer opportunities to pursue native trout species in a pristine setting.

The Gifford Pinchot National Forest region encompasses significant features including Mount Adams, one of Washington's iconic volcanic peaks, which is visible from many vantage points in the area. Day trips to higher elevations, scenic lookouts, and remote lakes are all feasible from Cultus Creek's convenient location. The forest provides an excellent climate for outdoor recreation across multiple seasons, with summer months offering warm days and cool nights, while spring and fall bring pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds.

This campground appeals to RV travelers seeking authentic forest camping without excessive development or commercialization. Families appreciate the relatively safe forest environment and creek access, while experienced outdoor enthusiasts value the proximity to extensive backcountry. The national forest setting means visitors experience genuine Pacific Northwest ecology rather than manicured recreation areas, providing educational opportunities about forest ecosystems, conservation, and sustainable outdoor practices.

A nice and quite little camp ground that has access to Indian Heaven Trail #33 tucked away in the back. Unfortunately Smokie's arm has been broken off since the last time I was out here. Even though it's closing in on mid-July there's still a significant amount of snow on Trail #33. I was only able to get about 3ish miles in before I had to turn around.

Basic, but secluded. Decent access to hiking north side of Indian Heaven Wilderness or fishing high lakes (via trail w healthy elevation gain). High Elevation so cold at nights all year round, snow on trail into IHW in June. Close to huckleberry fields. Mosquitoes on another level.

Stayed here with a big group of friends in August. We were able to find a VERY large campsite (Site 5D) that was big enough for 5 vehicles and 4 tents with room to spare. We were able to find a VERY large campsite (Site 5D) that was big enough for 5 vehicles and 4 tents with room to spare. This campsite has about 50 sites and even on a busy August weekend, there were still plenty of spaces available (only about 1/3rd of the sites were taken). There are two trailheads at this campsite that lead up to the Pcific Crest and up to Lemnei Rock for gorgeous views. Only 4 stars because it was fairly buggy (flies and mosquitoes abound) and the ~10 miles of dirt road was very dusty for a 5-vehicle caravan.
