About DRIFTWOOD CAMPGROUND - DESCHUTES

Federal campground in Oregon.

Nestled in the heart of Oregon's high desert landscape, Driftwood Campground offers RV travelers an authentic connection to the natural beauty of the Deschutes National Forest. This campground serves as an ideal basecamp for exploring one of Oregon's most spectacular outdoor destinations, where towering ponderosa pines frame expansive views and crisp mountain air refreshes the soul.

The Deschutes National Forest encompasses nearly a million acres of diverse terrain, from pristine alpine lakes to dramatic canyon vistas. Campers at Driftwood find themselves perfectly positioned to experience the full spectrum of what this region offers. The nearby Deschutes River winds through deep canyons and provides some of Oregon's most popular recreational opportunities, including world-class whitewater rafting, fly fishing, and scenic kayaking. Whether you're an angler seeking trophy trout or a paddler craving adventure, the river's clear waters and accessible access points make outdoor pursuits a highlight of any stay.

The surrounding forest landscape provides excellent opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, and wildlife observation. Trails ranging from leisurely nature walks to challenging backcountry routes wind through the campground's vicinity, offering something for every activity level and interest. Birdwatchers and wildlife photographers will find rewarding opportunities as mule deer, osprey, and various forest birds are commonly spotted throughout the area.

The high elevation location means pleasantly cool temperatures during summer months, making this an excellent escape from hotter regions. The relatively dry climate of Central Oregon's high desert means less rain and more reliable sunshine, allowing for extended outdoor enjoyment. Fall colors paint the forest in golden and crimson hues, while spring brings wildflower meadows to life.

Driftwood Campground is particularly well-suited for families seeking outdoor education and adventure, as well as retirees wanting to explore Oregon's natural wonders at a relaxed pace. The proximity to both developed recreation areas and remote wilderness creates a balance between comfort and genuine backcountry experience. This is camping as it's meant to be experienced, surrounded by the genuine beauty of the Pacific Northwest.

Visited here Monday 7/20/2020 to use the vaulted toilet after our hike, no toilet paper. Lots of bugs in the bathroom, but wasn't overly smelly like they sometimes can be. Road into this campground is very rocky. Would recommend for vehicles with more high clearance. Sites looked nice with lake access as well as trail access. Campground was open. No cell reception here.

Absolutely beautiful. It's very quiet. No running water, so you'll need to bring or filter your own. We staged here before heading out into Sisters Wilderness. In the morning we woke up to a Bald Eagle on the tree in our campsite. Drove my Honda Odyssey in on the road with no problems.

Lovely campground on a glacial lake with Tam Macarthur Rim overlooking the space. ~20 spaces for camping, and a general store (closed Mon-Wed) open for small necessities from Thurs - Sun. It's a lovely hike up to Three Meadows site from here, or up to Golden Lake site (marked by cairn on left side of trail). It's a lovely hike up to Three Meadows site from here, or up to Golden Lake site (marked by cairn on left side of trail). The site is on the edge of the burn site of a 2012 forest fire, so the first 2-3 miles out of Driftwood heading N-NE is not very pleasant due to the fallen and burned trees everywhere, but it gives way near Three Meadows to unburnt forest and natural vegetation.
